Any Tips On Sweeps??

I have that DVD. Im just trying to learn all the alternate picking stuff before I move onto sweeps, I just want to get tips, so when I do start to learn sweeps, I'll make sure I keep track of things more carefully.

Honestly, once ya get the hang of it, sweep picking is a lot easier then alternate picking... I think anyway... the actual picking technique for a sweep is nothing to tricky... find what works best for you... I don't like to use a real strong attack when I sweep, I'm sure others do... its more what your fret hand is doing... you can learn simple arpeggio shapes avoiding the "Rolling Of The Fingers" which is when ya play the same fret on alternate strings... if you ask me, muting these notes properly is the hardest for me... but if you are serious about sweeping you gotta learn it. Like somebody else said, start out learning some simple 3 string arpeggios first untill your are comfortable with the basic dynamics of sweeping, then move to the 4, 5 , and 6 string shapes... Check out some COB tab, Alexi uses a lot of these small shapes. Once you're the master...lol check out some of Michael Angelo or Paul Gilberts string skipping arpeggios... hope that helps ya a bit

its more important to play it properly and to mute the notes so they don't bleed into each other then it is to play them fast

and to make this perfectly clear... Michael Angelo, although technically flawless... is responsible for some of the most horrible music ever written... but you can learn a lot about sweeping and Arpeggios from him...lol

before somebody made a comment about how lame I was for liking MA...

no one realizes that when they learn guitar, and they just go for the gusto and think they are going to learn everything they need to know from learning lead... nothing annoys me more than a kid with no rhythm who thinks he can play lead and it sounds like a broken record player with a dying motor.

so true... its like Steak and Potatoes... Potatoes(leads) are an excellent compliment to a really great cut of Steak(rythme)

But who sits down and eats 3 choruses of Potatoes? lol

SO EAT YOUR STEAK!!! once ya got that down with some HP then dig into those tatters...lol

I find rythem and lead equally fun to pay. But then again I blow ass at both :)
I also think they are equally important. No lead skills its just boring, I think you need a good so,o to capture the song's feel. If you cant feel the song enoguh to play a solo, either you are a bad musician or its a bad song.

Opinion wise coming from a bass player with a broen hand

how so, more strings means more of a chance to fuck up, and more motion and much better chance of string ringing.
because the right hand 'stays' moving in the same direction for longer.
It just seems easier to get fast parts on more strings.
Hard to explain...

at first I thought the same... I found 5 string arpeggios even with taps easier then 3 string.. but now 3 string is just easier cos I consentrade more on playing clean..

i agree the more strings the easier it seems, thats why its best to learn 3 string sweeps first, it really preps you for it.

Hmm must be becaue I can do 3 stings so well that I find more strings annoying because I can't play them at the same blazing speed yet.... but its getting there.

That's a good exercise for improving brain speed as well.
