I tried it today for the first time sounded cool, not exactly sure how I'm gonna end up using it in the mix but it captured a tonne of decent sub-bass.
i think he means he used the speakers as a microphone, kinda like the yamaha subkick or other speaker transformed to microphone things.. he just used an entire cabinet full of them?

Yup, used a 2X12 on a few sessions. You just connect the speaker input(which acts as an output here) to either a DI box or a 1/4in jack in on your interface. Even a few feet away the signal can be pretty hot! Heard it got used on a Cardigans record before, they used a Marshall 4X12 to mic the kick.
I stopped using it cause I found it a bit shit sounding and built a proper sub kick instead, which I prefer the sound of. Used an 8inch speaker I got in maplin for around 10. Just soldered a jack cable to the end and use it with a DI box. Also using a snare stand to mount it.
