Anyone installed a car stereo system in your studio...

I'm not sure if you're refering to something specific by saying "alternate monitoring" but I've installed a lot of car audio equipment, and I always check out my mixes in the car before I finalize anything. I often make some pretty big decisions about them sitting in the car as opposed to sitting in front of my monitors.

I also used to be a big car audio buff...but without the booming bass crap....that annoys the hell out of me.

I prefer to listen in an actual car. Something about the way sound bounces around in there is much different then listening in a room. Guess that's due to the no wall (all around).

i think the whole car listening thing is not necessarily the speakers but the environment..i.e. speakers is crap positions and stuff which really show a different idea of the mix as opposed to monitors firing right at ya.

Actually, a car has very few paralell surfaces & thin walls, so bass buildup & cancellation doesn't happen like it would in a small control room. A car is a great place to listen to a mix. Hell, I'm gonna get a laptop & an FM broadcaster so I can remote control SS & mix from my car!

thanks guys... I'm familiar with the issues of car environments... so I'll take that as a no so far.

any more...

Most of the voodoo behind checking mixes on car stereos comes from the environment, not really the stereo setup there. I'd test the mixes in the car, just sitting there, as well as when driving, maybe even with the windows down. I've seen people driving down the streets around Ocean Way Studios with the windows/tops down to test mixes, so it's not at all uncommon.
