Audios not from the footage taken. Nor does it sound too much like the way mb mixed it. Are you chasing the album sound or this videos 'sound'. He's such an idiot for leaving.

wow lol I had my suspicions but wasnt sure am actually looking for the sound in the video. its been a while sense ive heard the album and I recently stumbled upon this video and really liked the kick

Yeah, it's called variety, dynamics and technique.

Odd to see him tracking on an acrylic kit o_O I always associated his kit sound with something wood.

Though in this vid I do admit, it's odd that his snare almost sounds like a roto tom.

I know what raw drums sound like. Listen to it again. His snare starts at one pitch, then goes up a semitone at 0:56, then back down at 1:35, back up at 2:27, etc. It's like someone changed the snare skin in between takes, but didn't bother to match the tuning to the first take. Hence my "rookie mistake" comment. It's not really a big deal, of coarse. I just think it's surprising that something as simple and easy as that could slip through a professional level product, especially when they're trying to make it look like it was all done in 1 take.

wow thats a boring song drum-wise

Yeah, that kinda went through my mind, looks like Mike isn't that creative when he leaves his tricked-out drum set

On the other hand there are drummers with an even a smaller set then the one in the video who can add really something a lot more interesting to a song

or maybe sometimes less is more. especially when all your other songs are tricked out.

This. The one thing about this song and many others on Octavarium is that they are very simple and too the point, no flashy show off bullshit that they started doing on their next album.

One of my favorite albums as a result, the songs are given their justice simply because less is more.

Wtf is with his snare constantly changing pitch? Seems like a rookie engineering mistake.

That is just Portnoy for you, he does this live. His ability to change the dynamic, tone, pitch and ring in a snare just by hitting it differently is godly. Watch their live DVD's and see him live like I have and you will see what I mean.

To the OP: Sounds like the audio from the video is unprocessed (eq/comp from the board on the way in but not mixed). Still in order to get that raw tone, you are going to need to get the right type of kick size and right heads/tuning. You just couldn't get that sound from a metal based kit dialed in for metal. This is why Portnoy used the Acrylic kit with no resonate heads on this track and a few others and that album.

You'd have to be specific as to which song's kick sound you're referencing off of Octavarium. Portnoy used 2 different kits on this record. The one seen in this video, which is a John Bonham replica kit. The other is his "Siamese Monster" kit which hasn't changed much in setup since 6 Degrees. The kick drum on this kit is a 26x14 (I believe. It's either 24x14 or 26, I'm almost 100% its a 26") to replicate one of John Bonham's kicks. The songs in which he used his "Siamese Monster" kit he plays (2) 22x18 kick drums.

Acrylic Kit
No Pillow in the kick drum
Evans E-Mad on front and back of kick (Or Aquarian Super Kick II)
Kick head tuned really loose till the wrinkles are out

What you are hearing is a live board mix no comps but probably gated to all hell.

Look closely at the bass drum, you can see the Emad on front and back and that there is no dampening in the drum. The emad does all the muffling for you
