Anyone uses/used these? Art Tps II. Kinda wonder if these are any decent. They are cheap. Saw em on some studiopicture once. They record some nice stuff there, if they are used on that i dunno.

If your looking at it because its a Tube Pre-amp, I believe its what they call a Starved Plate Tube design. Which means to all intents and purposes, the tube is there for aesthetics, and is of no benefit to the sound. ( a red LED behind the tube to make it look like its warming your signal )

That said, I haven't used this pre. ( the Art MPA 2 gold is a really good pre for the money ).

I used to use a Behringer Minimic 200 preamp, which is basically a copy of the ART Tube MP that the TPS II is based on.

Not really as bad as you might think, I actually really liked my MM200 as a bass DI and for getting rid of some of the harshness when recording using my POD.

Aha, thx for explaining me about this "Starved Plate Tube". Probably explains why there only one tube in it (i think there is only one), and 2 channels. I already have some Tube MP's, i guess it all would sound similar, with the exception of swichtable microphone indepence. Maybe i should spend abit more money for something more decent. Found sample recorded with Art Pro Mpa II one here. Probably going for that one soonish.

I think it's worth operating from the perspective that in this day and age, most preamps have a good signal/noise ratio and will record fairly decently. It's mostly about what flavour of preamp you want, and how much character you want it to impart.

There was a thread on Gearslutz (I can't find it now, so if anyone else can that would be great!) where they A/B'd an ART MP against some other really high-end preamp. Before the actual results were revealed, most people preferred the ART.

I love how drastically the voting changed after the guy revealed which pre was which. All of a sudden people can hear how much better the Great River pre sounds..

Your right of course. any preamp nowadays will give a usable result providing you know what your doing with it..

Quite a surprising test there, I really prefer the sound on the ART there. The GR just seems brittle and scratchy. Thinking I might grab one of those ART/Behringer pre's again, I could do with a nice bass DI.

Yeah. Heh. We all like to think we're much more aware of what constitutes good sound, when we compare ourselves to the audience. But tests like these just prove we're as full of shit as musicians and the audience are!

Yup. That's basically my stance.

See when I first read it, I did it blind too - even though the results were in. I preferred the ART over the GR too.
