Can it be used as a load box for silent recording with an amp?

No.

You can connect your speaker out to the 85 to get a DI signal but you'll still need to run a load in parallel. I think Ermz has done that in the past.

Answer: No.
But I get better results using the Type 85 vs the line-out on my Hotplate. The 85's instrument and amp inputs are paralleled, so I plug both the Hotplate and my 6505 into the 85 and the 85's output goes to my audio interface.
