Apparently the EMG 85 is no good.

um... no. the 85 is an excellent pick up.
That is my belief as well James. Thank you. :)

The pick up kicks major ass and you know that I have you to thank for your suggestion to buy it. This pickup is one of the best musical investments anyone can make.

But anyway I must apologise for this thread, made in anger and haste.

well, i've been playing are recording guitars for longer than the "boy" you speak of has been on this earth and i'm more than confident in my assessment of the EMG 85.. for all tunings. :D

James is the man! Now that's what I'm talking about! :worship:

Anyway, I should not have over reacted over Moonlapse's opinion. Apologies once again. :Spin:

Gah. I'd planned not to post here and let the thread die off, but I just want to get it straight. I wasn't saying that the EMG 85 is a bad pickup by any means, nor that it isn't suited to downtuning.

Nitronium, you have to admit that you did get really defensive and adopt a sort of audacious attitude toward Hopkins after he said that there were pickups more suited to 7-string guitars. I'd imagine that EMG create 7-string pickups for a reason - they serve their own purpose aswell.

Whilst I'm shaping up to be a big fan of James, and do respect his work and his opinions, you need to understand that his gear prefferences aren't the absolute word of God. Different gear serves different purposes, and just because James Murphy endorses it, doesn't mean it will vaccuum your house and take your dog for a walk too.

Anyway, no offense meant to anybody - just needed to get that out!
Later.

according to my friend Dino Cazares, who as i'm sure you all know uses the EMG 707 and even helped with the design, that pick up is designed as a crossbreed of the 85 and 81... so, nothing revolutionary there, they didn't re-invent the wheel or anything
:kickass:

I have installed (made it routed by a good luthier) the EMG 707 in my Ibanez RG 7321.

They're great!!!

And I found home to the Roland GK pickup, so when I plug the synthetizer I use only six strings but i get piano and strings sounds. Without learning to use an actual Keyboard. Awesome. Even though I had almost desisted, due to difficulties in the installation of the particular pickup.
The RG (fixed bridge) has the RIGHT height.

Hell yeah.
