A few years ago, (5+ years ago) comps, EQ's, efx, etc etc. where absolutely essential in outboard gear form but with the advancement of technology is it really that essential today? I hear a lot of great mixes here which were probably done mostly on software but many of the pros and fairly well off engineers also rely on their outboard.
I'm sure sure high quality outboard comps and EQ's are better, but the question is how much better are they really? Could one tell by ears alone if it was a real SSL board or a Waves SSL plug?
