Are there any operas worth purchasing?

Yup. Mostly highlight CD's are worth it though, unless you get a translated script along with the music so you can follow along.
 
I know who the guy is, at least. But the woman-jap-voice is off-putting in that first track.
 
Like Tully said, go for some highlight versions, then you just get the good bits. As an example, I very much enjoy of The Magic Flute or The Marriage of Figaro, Puccini is also really good
 
purchase operas? Go see one! I've been to a few, its a most enjoyable experience. I saw 3 out of 4 nights of Wagner's Ring Cycle (about 12 hours of music), that was the most epic experience of my life.

I didn't really like them until I saw one with a giant scrolling subtitle screen beneath the stage, then I realized how epic and kick ass they are.
