You can run as an independent. But it's a lot harder now because they changed the rules as few years back to cut down on the number of fruitcakes, loose cannons and inconsequential minor parties taking up space on the ballot form and stealing the votes from the big guys. Wankers.

I don't think you can just 'run for PM' as such - you have to be nominated, or nominate as an independent, for a local seat, win it, then try and gain enough exposure to become prominent.
It's not like in the US, where anybody can run for Pres if they are rich........remember Ross Perot?
