The point of genres is to simplify listening to music by putting similar bands into different categories based on musical techniques/what-have-you that they exhibit. Since avant-garde bands can logically never be similar sounds, as the term avant-garde refers to something virtually never heard before, it makes no sense to utilize the genre "avant-garde metal" to lodge bands in, as none of them will sound similar at all by common definition.
That being said even the members of Agalloch think they are neo-folk/post-rock/rock with some doom, and they seem pretty knowledgeable about marketing music to people, so I agree.
