Ashes Against The Grain

because i have a huge interest in "contesting" you or proving myself right

all i have an interest in is telling you you're an idiot for being wrong

I don't mean to be rude, but who gives a shit what type of metal of Agalloch is, I consider them to be kickass and that's it. Sure I love how metal is split up into sub-genres, but some bands break the chains of being called one specific type of music. I mean some bands are quite evident of what they are, like Dream Theater is clearly prog or Deicide is cleary death. Nobody should be called stupid becuase it's clearly in arguement of opinion. I would call Agalloch avant garde.

I wouldn't because avant-garde isn't a genre, rather a description. The point of genres is to simplify listening to music by putting similar bands into different categories based on musical techniques/what-have-you that they exhibit. Since avant-garde bands can logically never be similar sounds, as the term avant-garde refers to something virtually never heard before, it makes no sense to utilize the genre "avant-garde metal" to lodge bands in, as none of them will sound similar at all by common definition.

That being said even the members of Agalloch think they are neo-folk/post-rock/rock with some doom, and they seem pretty knowledgeable about marketing music to people, so I agree.

Yea, I got you. Whatever Agalloch defines themselves we should consider them it.

I don't think that about any other bands, but Agalloch seem very in tune with what they play, which is why I trust them on it.

Better than PF or The Mantle?

I'm gonna say AT LEAST just as good. They got some sounds on here that really appeal to me and I find the mix of styles on here pretty unique. Maybe its naive to say this so early on but I think they've made another masterpiece.

I'm not denying the metal in there, rather denying that it is to be called a metal album. Metal surely is there, but the release itself is surely not metal in and of itself.

Woah, what the fuck, Agalloch isn't Metal anymore? Yeah, okay. Add outside influences and your obvious core shifts. That makes sense.

Of course adding outside influences does not shift your core. That is why The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain are not metal. They have influence from metal, but are not.

Hmmm....well I guess we are currently a part of the metal scene whether we like it or not. We are, afterall, a metal band even though we explore many different styles under the dark curtain.
did you have anything else to say
