At which point should Anathema start paying Radiohead some royalties?

More like "pOO" i have to say.
Anathema right now is one of the top 5 gayest bands on the planet in all aspects (yes i am sure about the "all" thing). Worse than them is the people who worship them blindly (and despise everything pre Alternative 4). That reminds me another band of the top 5 (yes the name is OPETH)

The Silent Enigma > Pentecost ]|[ > Judgement > Serenades > Alternative 4 > Crestfallen > Eternity > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > stuff

...and who can deny the brilliance of the first couple albums?
The answer is fotmbm, he's very concerned about not listening to anything that isn't THRASH METAL FUCK OFF or NORSK ARISK BLACK METAL lest he be called a girlie-man, and lest I'd make fun of him for actually liking something that he's spent the better part of the last 3 years telling me how much it sucks (despite never having heard it) :)

What Anathema would y'all recommend me checking out? Bear in mind that I do in fact like the last couple Katatonia albums for no reason at all, but I have not enjoyed Radiohead in the least ever since I got over that chick who used to listen to them all the time.

I normally would be all STORMING WITH RIFFAGE, ALL POSEUR FAGS DIE, but if Erik and Dead_Lioness both like this band, I'm going to give em a shot.

Yeah, I saw you liking the last couple of Katatonias and went O____O, but while Anathema has a phase that is somewhat similar to Katatonia's recent stuff with clean vocals and all, I'd still recommend their early, epic/doomy stuff. "The Silent Enigma" and the "Pentecost III" EP both come with highest recommendations. If you feel like downloading a track or two, get "We, the Gods" (when it gets going, you shouldn't be able to deny the power of the riffage -- not STORMING, but well headbangable) and "Restless Oblivion" or "A Dying Wish"... and "They (Will Always) Die" from the debut, pretty much straight doom/death that one.

"Last Fair Deal Gone Down," in retrospect, is pretty fucking lame. Liked it when it came out, can't even bear to listen to most of the songs straight through now. "Tonight's Decision" is a winner for what it is though.

Its all a matter of opinion. I personally love the new Katatonia, the songwriting could be a bit more dynamic, as every song on Viva Emptiness sounds the same, but still, it is a damn fine album.
And jesus, Mindrot sounds nothing like Radiohead. I have all of Mindrots recordings, even their demo, and I have all of Radiohead's recordings- I dont see much similarity at all.

I also thought the song Closer off the new Anathema album, was as Radioheadesque musically as anything Anathema has ever done. Its a good song, but cmon.

Discouraged Ones = teh winnar of new Katatonia, but they're all good in their own right, says I, even though Last Fair Deal IS pretty lame!

the show in Montreal last year kicked ass, I have a dvd bootleg of it coming in the mail anymore.

Brave Murder Day > Sounds of Decay > For Funerals to Come > Discouraged Ones > Tonight's Decision > Dance of December Souls > Jhva Elohim Meth > Viva Emptiness > Last Fair Deal Gone Down

I don't love you anymore :P

I don't even try to compare old / new Katatonia. Both great, old slightly more but in a different way!

No man, not Mindrot but Eyes of Fire. One song. Track #1, "The End Result of Falling". Jeez, even the name reeks of the 'Head. Start downloading now and report back, kthnxbye. :loco:

I remember this thread. Here are my takes of all these bands now:

Katatonia
Tonights Decision and everything after is shit. Brave Murder Day kicks ass and so does Sounds of Decay. Dance of Decembre SOuls is above average. Discouraged Ones is the best of "newer" Katatonia, though some say it's completely different than what came after.

Anathema
Serenades rocks. Darren White era>>>>>>>Vincent Cavanaugh era. I do like Alternative 4 and a few songs from Judgment, but Eternity is probably one of the worst vocal performances ever. A Fine Day to Exit was awful.

Eyes of Fire
I'm selling their CDs.

Radiohead
I'Ve heard 4 of their albums. They are good, no doubt, but this stuff just isn't for me. At times I think it's pretentious pseudo-ntellectual music, and others, I think it's prety good. I liked Kid A the most.

Mindrot
Best band mentioned in this thread. Both full-lengths kick all kinds of ass.

I like old and new Katatonia, but only have Last Fair Deal Gone Down, Viva Emptiness, Tonight's Decision, and Brave Murder Day. When I start listening to them obsessively again (I'm positive it'll happen), I'll pick up December Souls and Discouraged Ones.
