atn: people who like metal

yes, and you should get heartwork. some really brootal troo metallers say this album is all sell-outtie, but i say it rules, and my taste is elite as hell. this album is pretty accessible to. not cookie monster metal. and the song heartwork kicks so much ass its not even funny.

I think they are overrated. Only because, IMO Mike Amott is one of the most overrated guitar players in metal. Although, Bill Steer writes some awesome riffs sometimes. Ehhh they are ok, nothing special.

I love Carcass and goatschool loves 'em way more than me.

I basically think BigFakeSmile's right on here and although I like their earlier grindcore albums (most notably "Symphonies of Sickness") I'd generally rather listen to "Heartwork" because Bill Steer's guitar solos shred more on that album than any of their others. His solo on track 9 (I wish I could remember the title) is the guitar highlight of the album. I know not many people care about shred guitar, but that kind of thing matters to me in a sort of "icing on the cake but slightly more important than that" type of way.

I kind of like "Swansong" in a semi-guilty pleasure kind of way, which I would bet is how they intended it, mostly for the solos. Steer's solo in "Go To Hell" (cheesy song) is totally awesome. I also like how even though the playing and chops are slick, the guitar tone isn't super slick as is the case with most shred guitar.

I love the last three "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious"
"Heartwork" and "Swansong"

Heartwork is the pinnacle of their sound though, but Swansong is awesome because it's what Carcass liked to call Rot n Roll.

like if AC/DC played death metal.

totally killer stuff IMO.

the early grind stuff is far too noisy for me.

but hell, I'm not very grim at all.

'Heartwork' has great songs, but the solos kill it for me. I'm on the other end of the spectrum from Nagle - I want riffs and melodies, not shredding. It would probably be my fave if it wasn't for the wankery.

Being said, 'Symphonies of Sickness' is a grind classic. Not for everyone, but it's got tons of energy and is just total brutality. And even if you're not into it, you can't doubt its influence - look at all the imitators who are STILL trying to remake that damn album: Exhumed, Impaled, County Medical Examiners, etc. etc...

how come kalimbas are everywhere all of a sudden and called thumb pianos? was there a movie about them or something i missed?

also what is shred guitar?!?!
