OK, yes, the 'fade in effect' is a little similar but far from "completely the
same". These songs are completely different though

Btw, I just recently listened to "Face of Melinda" again on my way home from
a night out. Damn it's a good and moving song!! Love it more and more.
Atonement is good to. A little to "linear" for my taste, but still one good
song!

Face Of Melinda is just pure s3x. It's brilliantly built and the distorted climax just always sends a shiver down my spine. It's got that certain something that makes me feel a way only Opeth can make me feel lol.

Atonement is, IMO, the worst Opeth song. I hate the vocal effects. Damn Steven Wilson, damn him to hell! (because he gave Mike the whole idea of effects, not because I know he chose to put these particular effects there).

Vintersorg: Dont you think that if Mikael would not have liked the idea of efects in the vocals, he would´ve not used them? Blaming Steven for giving im inspiration is kinda pointless.
Besides, i like the efects, it gives very much a sertain freezing feeling somehow, it is totally dead... and when the (aaaaaaaa-aaaaaaa) part comes it suddenly turns to something incredibly deep and living.

I think effects are cool as long as they're used tastefully and to further enhance the impact of a particular passage or song. I'm all about music aesthetics as opposed to just the music itself (being a wannabe engineer pretty much necessitates that though).

I mean due to autotune these days... hell you don't even need to sing well to be a singer.

I agree, there are times when some music sounds way too processed. I like Orchid a great deal, not only because of the sounds, but also because of the ultra-depressive vibe it gives off and I'd hate to think what it would sound like if it were full of weird effects and such. Having little or no effects can affect the listeners ear just as much as the use of them. Particularly when it comes to conveying emotion...
