and the snare is between the drummers legs... so from the perspective of the drummer, it IS in the middle ;)
 
It varies whether ur a lefty or right handed player, so you are probably best just doing what suits you and your clients best. blink-182's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is audience perspective and that sounds good. I personally mix based on how i feel on the day, alot of the time the tom fills help me to decide depending on how i hear what im trying to achieve in my head.
 
I always have and will do drummers perspective. Just sounds wayy better to me
