hey there,
well, since i started using nebula and a few other somewhat cpu hungry vsts i've run into some performance problems....last few sessions i did i was maxing out at like 97% according to the performance meter by the end of the mix. also i've had reaper crash a few times now, but only on those cpu intensive sessions. makes me think about a system upgrade.
well, i wanted to get another hard drive anyways (obviously not a performance related topic), so first question:
- from what i could tell by searching the forum internal vs external drive doesn't really matter, right? i'm currently thinking about a 1tb 7200rpm external firewire drive. would that be a good choice?
- also, my understanding is that with firewire harddrives, you want to run your interface from the firewire card of your pc, and then the harddrive from the second fw port on your interface, right? now, if i'm running a firewire 400 interface, would i still benefit from a fw800 harddrive? what about performance? is an internal drive faster or less prone to errors than an external one?
anyways, as for actually increasing the performance of my pc, i'm thinking about switching to windows 7.
my current system:
win xp sp2
intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0ghz dual core
4 gb ram
500mb internal drive
rme fireface 400
i assume the system should be fine for most audio applications, or am i mistaken?
my questions:
- would i actually gain any performance by using windows 7? or in other words, is windows 7 better in terms of tweakability for audio performance?
- should i go for the 64bit version? what are the limitations? will my vst's/daw (reaper) run just fine? what about non-audio stuff, can i run winxp/vista games etc on a 64bit os? will i have to use the 64bit version of reaper, too? or in other words, *should* i use the 64bit reaper?
generally speaking, i wonder if i could gain any performance by switching to win7 64bit from winxp 32bit.
thanks in advance!
