One can sense a strong mood attached to this brand of black metal as the pace of To Lay Like Old Ashes isn’t terribly quick and rather relies on the power of the riff to carry things along. This style isn’t necessarily something I listen to a lot, but there is definitely an emotional charge to be found when you do give it a go. The tone of the sound is somewhat coarse, but appealing in its nature. There is sort of an epic build to be made from the sound and it grows upon you with repeated listens to the material.

“This Dreadful Emptiness” has some stellar moments to be found, for example. There is a gradual build up towards more massive sounding moments eventually in this song and it carries a lot of weight towards winning you over. The material here displays a passion and this is what brings it into its own strong realm quite effectively. There may be some problems on the part of the listener formulating that there aren’t enough compelling twists and turns to be completely absorbing, but the amount of emotion generated in itself makes for something to be reckoned with in its own right.

For this type of an outburst of emotion see “Just for a Moment…”, which really pulls you into its grasp after picking itself up somewhat. The length of the album isn’t particularly long, but has enough time to have its effect upon you quite well. To Lay Like Old Ashes comes recommended to those fans of black metal in particular that crave the impact well wrought riffs can have upon you as Austere pull you in with their emotional style.
