Automating your choruses much?

I've read it's almost the norm for a few producers. If any of you do it I'd like some pointers.

Do you automate the volume of the entire master up? Just the guitars? Just the vocals? how's your day going? I mix of some of these? Or is this one of those "whatever is needed for the individual mix/genre/song" things?

What do you find yourself usually doing?

It is dependent on the song but I generally I find myself mixing choruses first, in particular the final chorus or climax of the song. I mix them full throttle, most elements are automated in some way to make the chorus the most memorable part of the mix. I usually try to make the chorus more powerful each time around sometimes by removing certain parts or adding certain parts, I realize that's more of an arrangement step but it definitely effects the way I end up mixing the section of the song. I then go on to mix verses and such and mix them to a volume that helps create some perceived loudness when contrasted with the choruses.
