i'm suddenly intrigued by parallel distortion.... although I can't imagine it'd be much different to the standard putting a bit of overdrive on screams. Anyone care to elaborate?

@Nimvi I'm using distortion too. It sometimes can work on cymbals too. But it can be abused easily and ruin the mix. A little bit can do the trick.

3-4 but sometimes just 2. Vocals usually get the most inserts, in my projects at least.

you can also use the mix knob on your daw without sending it to an additional channel.

It's quite funny, because i voted 5-6 and then actually checked how many FX i'm using (that is with saturation plugins included), and divided it by number of tracks in my recent work. Turned out to be 2-3 effects on average. I'm kind of surprised, because i thought that i'm overdoing things...
My FX chain usually consists of saturation, EQ and compression, sometimes transient designer on drums (these ofc are used when needed, but i think that anyone here knows that first answer to the OP question is "it depends" ;) ).

I´d have to say, most of my plugins go into drums and guitars, then vocals. Mostly up to 3 plugs pert track on drums (not EVERY track), about 4 on (rhythm) guitar including the aux channel plugins. Vocals, maybe 3-4. So, basically i´d say i use up to 3-4 in average.

VCC is love, VCC is life. If you stack two Neve mixbus plugins and listen carefully, you can hear the angel choirs singing. And they sound better because of it.

Seriously!

yeah, usually have VTM and VCC on every track... so it's mostly at least 4 effects per channel

^ this got me thinking...

while we're on the subject, would anyone (who owns VTM and VCC like CubanDude) mind exporting a mix where he used those on everything, or at least on a fair amount of tracks, and than export one where they're all bypassed?
For our A/B'ing sake and future GASing...

yeah, please.

I'd be interested to see what the big boys have going on in this regard. From Andy to Lasse/ Ermz, etc.

I got a peek at Colin Richardson's Pro Tools session from an As I Lay Dying mix and he MAYBE had 2-3 plugins per channel. From what I remember mostly just Metric Halo Channel strip, and some various eq/ cla compressors. From what I've seen assisting guys, the better mixers can get where they want with fewer moves. They just tend to make the right ones where needed.....
