So I've been debating on whether or not to give this band a try. I knwo that the albums are somewhat epic and deal with fantasy, which I'll admit I'm a nerd for. So should I go for it, and which albums should I start with?

wow, what a noob thing to do. i swore i was in the non-opeth forum. samsara, please move this. thanks.

I own the human equation, and the electric castle.

The human equation to my opinion is their all time best, (and most of the people think this way)

If I were you I'd start with that one (Mike Akerfeldt is on it to as fear. Hear track three, "All the time, I have waited with, rage! (mike growls rage and it's just perfect O: )

this band just isnt good.

If you MUST get a record of theirs get the one mike sings on, or The Electric Castle (iv only heard the one mike was on, but friends electric castle more so). Totally cheese ball music, thats honestly not worth anyones time.

Isnt that Devin Townsend?

anyway The Human Equation is probably the best place to start, depends if you can handle the cheese factor really, i personally dont see it as problem as the music is superb...altho the lyrics are a lil clunky :erk:

The Human Equation was by far my favourite CD of 2004 and even surpassed Ayreon's finest disc, their debut The Final Experiment. Very good album.

The Human Equation is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's that good. Ayreon's other albums are awesome too, but I really think that one is the best.

For an Opeth fan The Human Equation is probably the most logical starting point, as Akerfeldt does some great vocals on it. It's definitely worth checking out, but yeah it is slightly let down by excess cheese & James Labrie.

cheesy but has good moments

yeah, that's what I was afraid of. So I guess if this was a poll then more than 50% would be saying no to checking them out. But, I will give the human equation and electric castle a try. thanks to all for your opinions.

I am still amazed at just how many people think THE is the best one. I like it, and is the most diverse one, but i think it's only an average ayreon album. The Electric Castle is by far the favorite, and then every other release is almost tied for me. Cheese is apparent, but i've never seen it as a bad thing anyway. It doesn't seem try-hard anyway, i think Arjen knows it's kind of goofy.

That's one's opinion.

The whole story telling thing may give you half cheesy lyrics (which I personally like :p) and there are some amazin moments on that CD.
