There are a lot of bands I'd like to have shirts from, but they have terrible designs or rubbish writing on the back.

Eh..if its a band I love then I don't give a shit about the design..I got an Iced Earth one with "FUCK POSERS" on the back and the front design is shitty but it doesn't matter to me.

Now if the design happens to be fuckin awesome then thats a plus

There are a lot of bands I'd like to have shirts from, but they have terrible designs or rubbish writing on the back.

I have around 40ish shirts and I'm mildly picky unless a band doesnt have many designs (or only 1)... I watch ebay over and over and search through websites until I find what I want. Example: I dont have the two most common Hypocrisy shirts because the penetrailia and osculum shirts are just ugly to me... instead I have a Virus shirt and a The Final Chapter shirt. (and it took several months of searching)

The writing on the back I tend to ignore.

If the band has alot of different shirt designs i would go for the one i like the most obviously but if the band has only one or two shirts with meh designs ill take them anyway.

um, no? i was stationed in okinawa. i took free military flights to and from tokyo, where we have another air force base (yokota). that entire 5 day trip only cost me a couple hundred bucks
