Bands who can't pull it off live...

One only has to go to youtube and is able to see how Center of the Universe has changed...most specifically that note at the end...from bootleg Tokyo vid > OCWN > Recent fan filmed footage

Yeah, Nights of Arabia on OCWN is almost unrecognizable.

I'll agree with the assessment of both Dark One and DarkOne. I tend to think the negative feedback Virgin Steele is receiving in this thread, has less to do with their live performance and more to do with people simply not enjoying their style. To that end, I'd be curious to know if any of the folks who panned them in this thread, actually own and enjoy Virgin Steele CDs.

Gotta chime in here... anyone ever see Toto live? Don't laugh, collectively as a group of musicians and performers able to pull off their albums live, they are in an elite catagory... They are that good live...

going way back, I'm sure this wasn't the norm seeing how they became a worshiped band, but Pantera was god awful when I saw them on the Cowboys from Hell tour. Very sloppy, Phil messed up the vocals constantly, I've seen other latter clips where the band was great and Phil sucked, but I know they loved the drink but I don't appreciate paying money to see a band I really wanted to see come on stage drunk and not taking it seriously.

One of my favorite bands (get ready to laugh) is Dokken. I've seen them just about every time they've come to Chicago since 1995, and I want to strangle Don every time I see him. He makes Hansi Kursch sound like Pavarotti. To top it off, they play the same set list every time I see them. I know it sounds weird, but I really only go to support his bandmates, who are all very underrated musicians (I'm not counting George Lynch, as he's been out of the band for years).

I just noticed that DON DOKKEN is supporting Queensryche on their upcoming tour. Kind of odd.

Well, my turn to get lynched - Children of Bodom. Oh yea, their shows are wild and full of energy; in the crowd, but the last couple times I saw them in the states, they looked bored, hungover, drunk or all three. Sloppy as hell. To be fair, at Tuska in Helsinki they were much better.

Hm. I have to disagree. While Alexi seems to not be able to achieve certain vocals he used to, on Hatebreeder/Something Wild material, the band is fairly together as a live act, atleast the three times I saw them they were. A missed note or two in a solo, yeah, but never anything too distracting. They never seemed bored or hungover to me, sometimes a little drunk but never to the point where it detracted from their performance.


I'm lucky enough to say that I haven't yet seen any band I like live that hasn't been able to perform their stuff live. I've seen Into Eternity once, and I thought they were good.

Yeah, I am not a fanboy or anything, but I have seen Children of Bodom live three times, and thought they were great each time.

Sure, they are easy to poke fun at, but they are a great live band.

The last time I saw QueensRyche, they were okay...but it is clear they have peaked.

I own two Into Eternity Albums, and liked them both...but HATED them live--Same for Edguy (cheese personified onstage IMO). I saw The Cult live and thought they should stay in the studio.

If I saw a band once live and they sucked, I would never go out of my way to see them live again, unless I had to suffer thru them to see someone I liked.

A lot of Japanese Goth VK bands fall into this category...

Specifically coming to mind right now are BLOOD and Candy Spooky Theater. Half the music is prerecorded (the drums were software to begin with anyway) and playing the songs doesn't seem to be as important as doing fan-service for the audience.

I'm probably a bit biased by loving the band so much, but I don't think I've seen a tighter vocal or musical performance by any other band.

RATT are without equal when it comes to pitiful live performances. Unrecognizable tunes like each member is playing a different song. Stephen Pearcy sounds like shit always and he's hit and miss with the lyrics. RATT live is like a stick in the eye.

I agree 100%. I was so excited to see LE open for BG last year. Leaves Eyes' were AWEFUL. BG was disappointing, but LE made them look downright amazing. Liv strained the entire time (she is NOT a Soprano, no matter how hard she tries!) and Alex shouted instead of growled. Horrible.


Also, I agree that Virgin Steele was aweful live. I liked what I had heard of their stuff on CD, and was looking forward to their set. But as soon as Eric Defeis started singing like a woman, I couldn't take it. I had to walk out.

I won't repeat any already mentioned, but IMO Ted Nugent can't do it anymore. We saw him open for ZZTop (who are boring as hell live, but sound good), and he sounded like crap.

I don't know how the hell I forgot about Leaves' Eyes. They have been absolutely agonizing all six times I have had to watch them.

Well,seeing as I have seen them over 20 times being from Long Island,I am more than qualified to talk about them.
They USED to be a good live band

Their progpwer performance was the worst thing I have ever seen on that stage

Actually Zod I do like VS on record I have Invictus, Guardians of the Flame, House of Atreus Act 1 and 2, and Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part 1 and 2. I greatly enjoy them on album, but I just didnt like what I heard live. Just like I didnt for Epica, but lots of people liked Epica and even more like After Forever. Both bands I was underwhelmed with.

The SX/Epica/Into Eternity thread made me think...

I can't think of another band whose so universally loved on disc, but so frequently panned live, as Into Eternity. I was trying to think of who else falls into this category, but came up empty. There's got to be others.

Who else falls into this category?

EDIT: My question wasn't really about energy level. My question pertained to being able to perform live, what you play on your CDs.

Sorry... How exactly are IE bad live? Show me a video where they are not incredibly tight live.
