I've been trying to find good ones like crazy.
Most of the time I'll pop on anything that will work. From SoloC to Wagner to Kombinat to TSS. Heck, my real TS actually does some good stuff to bass grit, so sometimes I'll reamp through it!

i think new strings and the right bass/bass knobs set right and playing is just as important though
i have had great success at times with thoes plugins and less success at other times.....

And IMO Sansamp BDDI can only give you an awesome drive until a certain point, after that it starts to suck (around 60% and 70% of the drive knob).

But do notice that there is a bug in it:
NOTE TO MULTI CORE PROCESSOR USERS - There is a problem with running multiple instances of FreeAmp on multi processor machines re: duel core, quad core systems. This is a bug with SynthEdit and is being worked on now.
There is a work-around - Copy and paste the .dll file and rename (example) FA3_Full.dll copy\paste and rename FA3_Full2.dll, FA3_Full3.dll. You may make as many copies as you need instances just give different names to all of them and load them seperate. Sorry about the bug will fix as soon as I can fix.

Honestly, when I plug my bass directly into my Maxon OD808 then into my interface, it sounds damn good!

I really dig the sounds I got from my POD (first series), rectified model (dual recto).
I get some really nice distorted sounds out of it, so it should be able with gear box, too.
The Simualanalog JCM900 is cool, too, it's also cool on the clean channel on my fretless.

I wish someone would make a ProCo Rat modeled plug in, IMHO the best bass overdrive/distortion pedal.

Studio Devil VBA is the best bass plugin I've come across, and it does a bit more than just distortion:

I still have to say that the Sans Amp BDDI is unparalleled, but this plugin can give it a run for the money with the right settings IMO.
