So I have started recording a rock band and of course the drum performance is ok but far from perfect.

The problem is that I need to tighten it but still maintain a pushing feel (think phil rudd on steroids).

I tried to reduce the strenght but It still doesn't sound right.

Is there any kind of groove template or trick that can help to achive a tight and still energy inducing performance?

Tempo is 166bpm btw.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd try to use Elastic audio on it. move the trouble spots, don't touch the rest. Watch out for glitches especially in the overheads (on every event marker even without any stretching). If there's glitching, then you've got to do Beat Detective.

go through the track listening to the snare...if there's something really off fix it.
now the important thing...create beat/bar markers from the snare and quantize the kickdrum to that.
You'll see how the whole performance sounds MUCH tighter when the kick and snare are perfectly synced...and you'll keep 100% of the driving feel because you're not really changing anything but how the kick lines up with the snare

Thanks. I'll try that.:kickass:

hmmmm.
id just move any sections so the vibe is where i want it relative to the click, THEN B.D it.
80% ignore within 20% does the trick

yeah if you're going for feel doing manual moves will actually be alot easier the BD. All those groove templates and strength sliders are rarely worth the time it takes to program them. Find the trouble spots and do it all manually.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I ended up quantizing the kick only and not touching the snare timing. Worked well I think.
