Best 2010 Albums

Edit: On topic, Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm just might dethrone Incendiary for the top spot of this year. I'm leaning toward the position that it's the best Inquisition album, but I still need to "piece" the album together completely before I go ahead and take that stand.

THIS! So good.

In no order:

Zoroaster - Matador
Twilight - Monument to Time End
Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of such and such...
Atlantean Kodex - The Golden Bough
Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
Nightbringer - Apocalypse Sun
Hail of Bullets - On Divine Winds
Weapon - From the Devil's Tomb
Electric Wizard - Black Masses

The best I've heard, in no particular order:

Weapon - Drakonian Paradigm
Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits
Nomad Son - The Eternal Return
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
Realmbuilder - Summon the Stone Throwers
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
Zuul - Out of Time
Watain - Lawless Darkness
Stargazer - A Great Work of Ages
Sahg - III
Procession - Destroyers of the Faith
Orphaned Land - The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR
Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead
Grand Magus - Hammer of the North
Ereb Altor - The End
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Electric Wizard - Black Masses
Enforcer - Diamonds
Dawnbringer - Nucleus
Craven Idol - Ethereal Altars
Blood Revolt - Indoctrine
Atlantean Kodex - The Golden Bough
Ares Kingdom - Incendiary
Ludicra - The Tenant

Still need to give more listening time to Inquisition, Christian Mistress, Deathspell Omega, and a few others. This was actually a really good year I think.

I totally fucking forgot that Blasphemophagher released an album this year. I own it and I don't think I've even listened to it. Damn, what the hell is wrong with me?

So I usually don't like year-end 'best of' lists as a matter of principle. Perhaps it's also an issue of practicality. I have neither the time nor the desire to attentively listen to enough albums released in a given year during their year of release to be able to make a top 10 that I won't regret after those albums are subjected to the test of time and cool-headed assessment. And the amount of stuff that has made a lasting impression on me over the years is pretty small. There are only about 3 albums from '09 for instance that I'm still listening to, I think. The rest of it is good for a couple of listens and then it can go straight to the landfill for all I care.

Despite what I've just said, I think I want to say that the new Inquisition album is probably the best I've heard all year out of the handful of albums that I have heard. I predict that if anything sticks with me long after 2010 it will be that album. Everything else I've heard was disappointing, mediocre, or enjoyable for a couple of spins. Notable disappointments were Immolation and Atlantean Kodex. I've also listened to a smattering of tracks from various albums mentioned here and elsewhere, and almost none of it has piqued my interest. :(

edit: hmmm, maybe I should check out that Sloughfeg album.
