Spectors are just my all-time favorites... I dunno if it's the EMG's or the full figured maple bodies, but those basses just own! The craftsmanship is immaculate and the tone is heavenly! It's tight, it's bright and it's punchy... I think the best example of how you can get those to sound is the track I Can't Hide by Pantera... simply the best bass tone I've ever heard! (of course, that's not the only tone they can produce)

That being said, I totally recommend Warwicks as well! Those MEC's and weird body woods they like to mix for their basses really get the job done as well!

BTW, I'm not exactly sure what tone you're after, but I'm one of those dudes who likes their tone modern: bright, tight, sorta midscooped and punchy. As a bassist, I personally think those ultra-deep, ultra-smooth tones, while they get the job done, are kinda boring to listen to, especially in the mix... but that's just my opinion!

Bass need mids.

That said, I can't suggest anything that hasn't been mentioned already. Although, I think some of the ESP Standard Series (not LTD) basses sound and play great. Miller from Devildriver uses several and has nothing but good things to say, and his tone is killer live.

Have loved my Fender Jazz forever but just bought a Spector Euro 4 LX. Always wanted an early-80's NS2 but this'll have to do....I'm sure I'll cope!

I've owned a couple of boutique basses in the past (Status, Warwick) but my Fender J & P basses I've had have tended to sit better in mixes. Especially my modded Jazz....which has sadly seen better days and has been retired for the time being.

Another bass player here who loves his mid-range tones. The Warwick $$ Corvette and the Spector Euro or NS range are the stand-outs for the heavier bass player who wants clarity in their tone. An honourable mention goes to the Cort Curbow's, for someone on a budget (as in, doesn't have around $2k to spend) they are stand-out basses.

Its frikkin wierd that no-one else have suggested them!
I mean, Cliff himself used them along with his rickenbackers.
Although you should get a used one from the 70's or 80's, because the new-ones suck.
It wont cost you more then about 200-400$.
