best bass PU's for punch and grind

Lollar or Fralin pickups for sure!

Get overwound pickups if you want more output and lows at the expense of mid presence. Get underwound pickups if you want more highs. Or get stock if you want an even balance.

I had Quarter Pounders in a P-Bass and hated them. They were loud but they had zero tone. When I swapped them for stock Fralins it sounded much better.

My two cents.

I've had Bart's and EMG's (both HZs and CS/DCs) and the Quarter Pounders in my Jazz are still my favorite. Really high output, and strong bass and mids. As with a jazz, I roll the treble back, but not lacking in tone at all.

I like the EMG CS/DCs I have in my ESP, but they are much rounder and don't have any where the grind of the Duncans. I think overall I just like single coils in bass for mid focus and grind.
