Who would be your top guitar player of any genre and any time?

My top few would be Jimi Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dimebag Darrel, Toni Iomi and Alexi Laiho.

Some of these may not technically be better than some other players but they are my favourite to listen to.

You forgot Clapton, and BB King and Robert Johnson, and Chuck Berry. But yeah Hendrix is the greatest. And by the way its Jimmy Page not Jimi Page.

There is no correct answer because there is too many important contributions

Jimi for kissin the sky
Carlos for feelin' it
Eddie for lickin' the sky
Stevie Ray for feelin' it
Ingwie for his wake up call and influence
Petrucci's intense library of current contributions and influence
Vai for being "The Wizard"
Satriani for keeping it feel
Romeo for all his awsomeness and "intence library of current ....."

these are just a few of my favorite things on any given day

There's a thing called taste. But in pure "guitarsmanship", none of them are the best.

I don't understand... the title says best guitar player of all time and the thread itself says name your faves.. whatever. Best guitarist as a musician would be Shawn Lane imo, my faves however are Jari Maenpaa, Steve Vai, Jani Liimatainen, Alexi Laiho, Paul Gilbert and Ihsahn.

For pure shredtasticness-Yngwie Malmsteen
for solos that are just plain out rad-Alexi Laiho
For being "The Man"-Joe Satriani
but I also like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, you know all the typical virtuosos.

Still what about Kurt Cobain. And IMO, I think skill is being able to solo well and come up with good riffs. Guitarists like Jimmy Page, Kurt Cobain, Slash, Dimebag Darell, Joe Perry, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix are all amazing in those aspects.

Hey, look rolling stone knows 100 guitarists!

There's really really no way to gauge this question because it's all a matter of taste, and what you've been exposed to.

Some of my favourites are:

Dave Mustaine
jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhoads
Lord Tim (LORD/Dungeon)
Yngwie Malmsteen
Paul Gilbert
Steve Vai
Ace Frehley

my favorite guitarist of all time is.

...ME...:)

i always play what i want to hear, when and how i want to hear it.:headbang:

and ofcourse the connection to myself and release of personal expression within is much greater impact then hearing somone else try to connect to me thru there own unique language.

it may be hard to understand if you not a musician yourself.

ofcourse there are about a thousand other guitar players both famous and not who i hold in high reguard at there craft.

Yea, sorry Rolling Stone is fucked. Its a pop vote which is a valid as American Idol. Seems they like to idolize whos dead. Duane Allman is nearly irrelevent and certainly not #2 and BB doesnt rate above Stevie, Johnson or Clapton and I love BB but he just does his BB thing. Cobain does not belong on there if they went clear to 1000. I dont think Hammett bares any stronghold, most all metal players in his prime time had far more tastefull solos. Keith Richards, Jerry Garcia, Johnney Ramone, George Harrision, Dave Davies ? I mean come on already. At least 20 if not fifty of them dont belong on there. At its best it is a 50 noteworthy guitar players. Like Glen Buxton, Brian May, Peter Green, Knofler, Garcia, Allman, Bloomfield, Page ect. not the hacks that all the girlies fell in love with like Kurtie baby

I wasnt aware that Lou Reed even played "guitar", I dont think he is either but the two that played on Rock and Roll Animal were great early rock jam players.

If I was editor of Rolling Stone I think I would have skipped this idea. Goes to show who buys Rolling Stone ... not musicians. THey really sucked in the 70's too when most of these people you see mentioned were playing. Rolling Stone was most likely bashing them in favor of the return of the Beatles, Monkeys and Hermins Hermits ................ YIKES! Pop Pop Pop
