It's tuff, but I think it's cool trying to justify which album shows the true spirit of metal and, at the same time, you can enjoy it just on the merits of the guitar.
My vote, for today, goes to: Morbid Angel "Covenant"
Even though "Blessed are the Sick" is my favorite Morbid Angel album, I think "Covenant" shows Trey Azagthoth reaching his peak. He has improved since "Covenant", but it is that album that he starts to master the ability to combine the aggression of death metal with the technical ability of Eddie Van Halen, the improvisational "feel" of Jimi Hendrix, and the catchy riffs of Mercyful Fate.
