Best horror movie ever?

this is a hard question to answer. Horror movies are great the first time you see them but after that, it's hard to get spooked by what you know is coming up. the only way to gauge this question is to try and remember how spooked out you were the first time you saw that film. The Exorcist comes to mind. Serpent and the Rainbow. the 90's were horrible for horror unless any of you can remind me of anything good.

Herschell Gordon Lewis' "The Wizard of Gore".
I saw that at a drive-in as a kid and haven't been the same since!

Spidey, did you see the picture of you talking to Charlie that I posted in a different thread?

You're from Pittsburgh right?

Actually it wasn't a question rather just stating this new film Poultrygiest could be the greatest ever :)

Halloween (the first one) still spooks me. Myers in that is so creepy.

Yeah, Poltergeist is scary, it sets a good tone with the spooky TV and the exorcists and finally corpses raising through the ground.

Sidenote. The book that made feel most uncomfortable is 1984. The whole setting is creepy.

The best horror movie ever is Night of the Living Dead. The Blair Witch Project was scary as hell when I saw it the first time because I knew nothing about it and it was easy to believe that it really happened. I still like it. I also like the japanese version of The Ring very much. I'm also a huge fan of the first hour of Children of the Corn! I think the movie drops the ball when supernatural things come in.

By the way, I still don't understand why The Exorcist always gets voted the scariest movie ever. It does nothing to me.

The Exorcist scared the shit outta me when i was younger, so much so i couldnt watch it again until about three years ago... As for my favorite I'd probably go with the original Ring or the Blair Witch 2...

mmmmm scary!

No horror movie is scary! There all piss poor and usealy gore fests, but each to their own and all that. Halloween has a certain something.

um .....the scariest films i have seen so far.......

the fog.... saw it late eighties as a 14 yr old kid, man that film made me poo
ringu.....2 in the morning, stoned out of my mind and very afraid
event horizon, seen on tv since and thought it was very average, but got caned and saw it at the flicks when it came out, holy moses i am still scarred, i hate the ending to that movie

the horrors that scare me are the ones where you see nothing and its left for your mind to fill in the blanks, much worse than anything you can see...... esp when innocent stuff is used and becomes the enemy, like ringu...

as fer my actual fave horrors, i love cheese...........puppet master ( 2 and 4 especially), childs play ( not 3 or 5), demonic toys, anything where toys come to life it seems :).......

I liked the original Halloween as I felt Michael Myers was more in the shadows and there was all that mystery to him.

The first Alien film scared the crapola outta me as a teenager. As much as I love all the sequels they ruined the mythos behind the Alien though - there was something infinitely more creepier about Giger/Ridley's vision of the Alien than all the other incarnations. Due to the simple fact that you didn't know sh1t about it.

I actually think the closest they got to that film (and it wasn't really that close) was Alien 3. They pulled that whole war theme of Aliens right back and went for the more one on one fear factor of the original film.

I cannot begin to tell you how many nightmares I have had about the Xenomorph!

Brokeback ain´t got shit next to any Chuck Norris or Lou Gossett flick. Heavy gayness and oiled chests. And they like beating lesser, browner people (sexual reppression) before finding their long lost partner.

I'm Catholic and my parents wouldn't let me watch this movie. Of course, I got my hands on a copy anyway. I was like 11 or 12 when I saw it. I remember being so spooked out by it that I couldn't sleep with the lights turned off. When I watch it now, I just see it as a 70's film. But the first time I saw it, it was like a documentary from hell !!! Oh, and the stairs where the priest takes a tumble down at the end... it's like a 10-15 minute walk from my apt on the way to work. I pass by it everyday and think to myself that a demon killed a priest here.

I've always thought that it must be much scarier if you deal with religion.

By the way, Saw's ending shocked me more than anything else in recent years. I mean part when the guy finally snaps (don't want to spoil it if someone hasn't seen it). I think it's very realistic; the guy's lost all hope and there's nothing else he can do than to get the job done. It still gives me the shivers.

Also, when I first saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre at twelve years old, it was so disturbing and depressing that I didn't want to watch it anymore, yet I couldn't stop looking at it!

I was thinking of movies that in some form or another scared the crap out of me. Turns out there are a lot so I have concluded I'm just a giant scaredy cat. Here goes:

Children of the Corn - I get creeped out by movies that pit God v. the devil. I'm not sure why but I do. Plus the music creeps me out too. I was home alone when I watched this for the first time and had to have my grandfather come from a few blocks away to check out "noises" in the hallway.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Leatherface didn't really scare me. The other crazy family members did.

Dawn of the Dead - I like my zombies walking, not running at me. Then I don't stand a chance. I only watched the first few minutes and had to leave the room.

Them - This is an old black and white movie about giant ants. To this day, I get creeped out when there is a bunch of ants congregating in one area. I think they are plotting to take me away. Those buggers are strong!

The Blob - To this day I don't like jelly that much. I don't know what it was about the fly landing in jelly and turning into the Blob but it too scared the crap out of me.

The Ring - Not a scary movie until the end. Then I realized why people were scared to death.

Blair Witch Project - scary movie because it seems like it could really happen (I think someone else said that too).

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - I HATE umpa lumpas or however the fuck you spell those bastards names. I don't want to look at, speak with or hear an umpa lumpa. They seriously freak me out probably more than anything else.

___________ - I can't remember the name of this movie to save my life. I have asked three other people who have seen it but none of them remember the name either. Anyway, its about these little people that live under the stairs and at the end, they grab the main character and drag her underneath the stairs, never to be seen again. This one truly scared the crap out of me.

Cujo and Jaws

I know there are more but this is enough for now.

Ok, this may be weird but what the hell. I love movies like The Exorcist and Poltergeist and, hey, even The Exocism of Emily Rose, but they don't really freak me out, they're kinda creepy, but the one that did get me wound up was Alien Abduction: The McPhereson Tapes!! Watched it late one night by myself, from about half way through. Almost daren't go to bed! It wasn't as scary when I saw it from the start though.

Cheers me dears.
