Best metod for tom's micing

You gotta be kidding me about the triggers?

Anyhoo..
Both work just fine..
I used the Audix D-Vice's with great succes, e604's work great, and i've also never had trouble micing tomes with a couple of md421's on stands!

I prefer mic stands and BIG mics like the md421 to make sure the drummer leaves enough space between the toms and the cymbals to avoid bleed.
If you tell him/her that he/she has to put the cymbals up higher so you don´t get the bleed from the cymbals he/she will constantly try to lower them so that he/she can play better (although it doesn´t matter with most of them).

BUT if you use mic stands and BIG microphones the drummer HAS to leave space so that you can mic the toms. Otherwise there wouldn´t be enough room for the mics.

If you use small mics like the 609 and clamps I bet that EACH drummer will ask you if he/she can lower his cymbals. And then you´ll always end up with replacing all the toms. Good luck!

usually stand (more flecible mic-placing.
I do often use clamps though, just to reduce space.
I'll only trigger toms if the drummer brings wrong heads or so (just happened on a project...despite me advice he brought some really shitty sounding skins, I tried to get a decent sound out of them and tuned them to fuck, but in the end I'll have to work with samples I guess....
I hope the day comes when drummers realize that aquarian2 heads must never be on a tom during recording
