Best of Power, Best of Prog

It's almost like he had that list memorized... and ready to go! :headbang:

You aren't that far from the truth. Memorize... no quite the opposite. Horrible memory. I'm a list nerd, i like to keep track and write down all my favorite songs from all my favorite genres from gothic metal to prog to power metal to blsck/death metal to 70s and 80's metal. Guess I'm just funny like that.

Here's my stab at this:

Helloween - Eagle Fly Free
Fates Warning - The Apparition
Queensryche - Screaming in Digital
Crimson Glory - Red Sharks
Psychotic Waltz - Halo of Thorns
Payne's Gray - ...To End Infinity
Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon
Stratovarius - Out of the Shadows
Threshold - Into the Light
Angra - Time
Conception - Roll the Fire
Blind Guardian - I'm Alive
Iced Earth - Brainwashed
Eternity X - The Confession
Kamelot - We Are Not Separate (Roy Khan version)
Symphony X - Sea of Lies
Rhapsody - Warrior of Ice
Devin Townsend - Night
Royal Hunt - Tearing Down the World
Tarot - Warhead
Nightwish - Sacrament of Wilderness
Labyrinth - Lady Lost In Time
Zero Hour - Eyes of Denial
Edguy - Babylon
Evergrey - Nosferatu
Vanden Plas - Iodic Rain
Ark - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Pain of Salvation - In the Flesh
Spiral Architect - Spinning
maudlin of the Well - Heaven and Weak
Dark Moor - Starsmaker
Sonata Arctica - Black Sheep
Andromeda - In The Deepest of Waters
Mechanical Poet - Hermetical Orchard
Riverside - Out of Myself
Disillusion - Fall
Threshold - Pressure
Circus Maximus - Abyss
Cynic - Adam's Murmur
Leprous - He Will Kill Again

I tried to go in more or less chronological order so it's easier to see how the styles developed and tried to include as many different bands as possible while avoiding ones I felt were too generic.

Nice suggestions guys. I really appreciate the energy put forth here.

I especially like the two that have specific tracks listed. This gives me a chance to see if I can match up tracks and gain a consensus. Sure it may be like asking everyone what their favorite color is, but if I got enough "data points", I might be able to compile a truly "best of" for the genres, or at least a "favorite of Progpower attendees" list.

Any more lists?

So far I only see two folks' lists? I know there must be dozens of regulars that frequent these forums and willing to voice their opinions. Getting ready to make up a care package for these potential Progpower attendees. Are there no other knowledgable Progpower alumni willing to get involved and help - share their vast wisdom??

Other recommendations I've thought of.

After forever - Digital deceit, Open, Come
Delain – Frozen, Sleepwalkers Dream, Mother Machine
Dark Moor – Swan Lake
Heed – I Am Alive, Last Drop of Blood
Jag Panzer – Frozen In Fear, Take To The Sky
Kamelot – Call of the Sea, Forever, Wings of Despair, The Spell, Rule The World
Holy Mother – Wars, Toxic Rain
Nevermore – Born, My Acid Words, Bittersweet Feast, Emptiness Unobstructed, Believe In Nothing,
Nightmare – Cosmovision
Nightwish - Bless The Child, Nemo, Dark Chest of Wonders, End of All Hope
Pagans Mind – Hallo Spaceboy, Through Osiris eyes, The Celestine Prophecy
Wolf – Night Stalker, Evil Star, I Am The Devil
Seven Kingdoms – After The Fall
Stormwind – Passion, Touch The Flames
Stranglehold - Total Eclipse
Tad Morose - Anubis
Royal Hunt – Paper Blood

Two hours of Savatage...then ask them if they think they're worthy of attending! :D

Seriously though, I'd start them out on the building block bands of the genre. Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, (early) Angra, (early) Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Savatage, (early) Edguy, Iced Earth and Symphony X as great examples. If they don't like those bands, then I highly doubt you'll be able to turn them onto newer bands within the genres of prog and power metal. That's simply my opinion.

Can you list specific tracks of these artists that really "hit the spot" for you? Thanks man.

I think it's just a matter of taste as much as I've tried I can not get into Iced Earth I would substitute Sonata Arctica or Kamelot in their place same with Symphony X I would substitute threshold I think there a lot more accessible for a new listener
