I'm looking to replace my venerable Samson CO2s for something that's going to be a significant improvement in detail. The pair would be used pretty much exclusively for OHs, and my budget is in the ~$1000. Suggestions?

Fortunately for you there are a ton of great options in that price range.

My personal faves in that price range are the Josephson C42 and the Beyerdynamic MC930. The Josephsons have great transient response and are a little brighter, and the Beyerdynamics are beefier sounding.

The Oktava MC012/MK012 is also a great mic, especially considering the price point. I haven't used the Joly-modded version but the clips sound nice.

Zen Pro Audio has a great clip database that lets you compare multiple mics.

I just got the michael joly ultimate SDC mod II pair. havent tried them yet, but on the site they sound like an arguably better km184 and they're $499

I'd suggest Beyerdynamic MC930s. Solid mics, smooth and detailed. Work great for everything I've used them on so far. But they live on overheads for me.
