Best sort of amps for playing extreme metal.

I need some recommendations I am looking into getting a decent model that could be used to jam with a band or played live if needed and I don't want to spend much more than $700 Canadian.

I also use a Godin Freeway Classic, more of a rock/blues guitar but I am confident I could get a good metal sound out of it with the right amp.

Well...I'm not too sure about extreme metal because I don't really listen to it much, but I have a Crate GT1200H half stack and it has a really heavy distortion on it. It also has a lighter distortion channel and a clean channel. 120 watts I think and it's good and loud. It was only $500 (US) which is a good price and it sounds nice enough to me.
