Best/Worst releases-2006

Blood Mountain by Mastodon was my favorite, my most hated was probubly..Temptation come my way by The Showdown

There were many good ones, Bleeding Through's The Truth, Napalm Death's Smear Campaign, Into Eternity's Scattering of Ashes, Cannibal Corpse's KILL, Deicide's Stench of Redemption, but my favorite was, believe it or not, Dragonforce's Inhuman Rampage.

To me the biggest dissapointments were the cds that got the most respect. The four horsemen- Blood Mountain, Sacrament, As Daylight Dies, and 2007's Threads of Life, all of them sucked in my eyes. Temptation Come My Way would be a decent album if they haven't showed they had so much better in Chorus. It's the worst follow-up album ever.

I haven't listened to much metal in 2006 but my favorite for this year has to be Negura Bunget - OM. I also really liked the new Amon Amarth and the new Novembre. Least favorite: Dissection's Reinkaos by far. The lyrics get way too satanic and the musicianship is way bad. I also didn't like the new Katatonia. Daylight Dies is my 3rd least favorite 2006 metal disc but I liked a few of the songs off of it a lot.

Darren Cowan Top 10 of 2006

1. Amon Amarth "With Oden at our Side"
2. Martyr "Feeding the Abscess"
3. Ihsahn "The Adversary"
4. Torture "Storm Alert"
5. Unearth "III: In the Eyes of Fire"
6. Anonymus "Chapter Chaos Begins"
7. Gorgoroth "Ad Majorum Sathanus Gloria"
8. Deicide "The Stench of Redemption
9. My Dying Bride "In a line of Deathless Kings"
10. All That Remains "The Fall of Ideals"

Honorable Mentions:
Kataklysm "In the Arms of Devastation"
Dismember "The God that Never was"
Suffocation s/t
Ogre "Seven Hells"
Keen of the Crow "Premonition"

I would have also put Mord-s/t and Craft-Fuck the Universe in there.

If it sucked, I can't remember it.

Why do people like the new Katatonia? Imo it's their worst. One of the few 1 star albums I ever heard from a band that I really like.

Haven't heard the rest of Katatonia's catalog, but between Viva Emptiness and TGCD, TGCD is the best of the two. It is one of the most cryptic albums I have ever listened to. Absolutely brilliant.

I just ordered LFDGD, so we'll see how that goes when I get it.

Best:
Katatonia
All That Remains
Raunchy
Metal Church

Ashes Against the Grain and The Great Cold Distance were both exceptional, but not the year's best. Blood Mountain was mediocre leaning just a bit towards good. A Matter of Life and Death had its moments. Amon Amarth's release was solid. Inhuman Rampage was very fun and the associated tour was good times, but it's not nuanced enough to call the best.

The best release was Enslaved's RUUN.

Also, Monotheist sucks.

i have to go with reinkaos as well. for a band who made classics like SOTLB and the somberlain, this was definitely a let down, bored me as hell.

Best-Negura Bunget-OM. Drudkh-Blood in our Wells. Agalloch-Ashes against the Grain. Enslaved-Runn. Katatonia- TGCD. Melechesh-Emissaries. Non-Metal- Tommy Bolin- Whips and Roses. I stay away from bad releases.

I had listened to hundreds of cds last year and top 5 was something like:
1. Dornenreich "Durch Den Traum"
2. Wedard "Einsamer Winterweg"
3. Agalloch "Ashes Against the Grain"
4. Ahab "The Call of the Wretched Sea"
5. Bishop of Hexen "The Nightmarish Compositions"

There were numerous other excellent albums, I may have just made a top 50 list at least. Missing a bunch but here some albums nothing short of being very honorable mentions of which I can think of:

Wormphlegm - Tomb of the Ancient King
Anti - The Insignificance of Life
The Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure
Sombre Chemin - Notre Héritage Ancestral
Peste Noire - La Sanie des Siècles - Panégyrique De La Dégénerescence
Negurã Bunget - Om
Stielas Storhett - Vandrer...
Sterbend - Dwelling Lifeless
Autumnal - Grey Universe
Panzerchrist - Battalion Beast
Sarkom - Aggravation of Mind
Secrets of the Moon - Antithesis
Keep of Kalessin - Armada
Antaeus - Blood Libels
Moonspell - Memorial
Monarch - Speak of the Sea
Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam
Anaal Nathrakh - Eschaton
Epheles - Souviens-Toi
Koldbrann - Moribund

And as for worst, one of my all-time favourite bands:

Cralde of Filth - Thornography ...was a horridly mediocre piece of shite.

Best:
Solitude Aeturnus - Alone
Cult of Luna - Somewhere along the Highway
Lair of the Minotaur - The Ultimate Destroyer
Tankard - The Beauty & The Beer
Merrimack - Of Entrophy & Life Denial
Vader - Impresions in Blood
Kayser - Frame the World...Hang it on the Wall

Only albums I didn't like last year were:
Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (I might add I'm a huge fan of Katatonia)

I haven't heard it... I'm getting a burned copy of it soon though. Yeah COF has really dropped in quality for me. Back when I was in high school COF was my favorite band and practically worshipped their first 4 releases. I still think they are great actually. Since then they have steadily declined in quality. Pity.

It's downright terrible. To be honest, the production is better suited for a pop-album especially with the song 'The Foetus of a New Day Kicking" - easily one of the worst songs they've ever made. At best I would give it a generous and favouring 5/10 but I could ramble on forever on why I dislike it but I'll leave it at that.

But yeah I completely agree, their first four releases are fantastic and among some of my favourite alltime albums with my personal favourite CoF album being 'Principle'. :kickass:
To a lesser extent I like 'Midian' and 'Damnation' ...and 'Bitter Suites' and 'Nymphetamine' were alright, but even 'Thornography' makes 'Nymphetamine' look like a masterpiece, by comparison.
