Opinions: Worst and best lyricists.

Of course it is. Don't get me wrong, I love DM, but when looking for lyrical depth or fluid, well constructed use of the English language in Death and Black Metal, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find an example.

Compared to other genres Death metal has more thoughtful subject matter arguably, and well constructed lyrics.

Care to elaborate?

I'm open to being completely wrong, I just think that it's one hell of a task to find thought provoking lyrics in DM. Er, superficially at least, most bands don't go beyond evil-ness or "kill, splash, insert willy, eat."

All genres have weaknesses such as that. Where its Satan in DM/BM its "oooh baby baby" in pop, etc. etc. And like those other genres, there is also a fair share of decent lyrics.

actually, it's partially true, death metal has a lot of well-crafted lyrics, starting off with Death and celtic frost

Yours is more a description of goregrind than DM. While pop bands are spewing out non-stop nursery rhyme lyrics about a disfunctional relationship or some trivial topic with intentionally simple lyrics and massively repeated themes... Death Metal bands have covered a wide range of topics, that could be considered "deep" or mentally stimulating, often intellegently constructed and with more lyrics per song and including more "big words".

At the Gates - City Of Screaming Statues

City of screaming statues
Your soul will grow to understand and respect this place
It will be with you in your heart, on your journey

The gates of the city lies before you
The temples of truth whispering their waves
Chase your visions, slay your fears
What moves the truth is the sound of your thoughts

Scream

The struggle of the soul
Depends on the strenght of your will
Among the twisted shapes of your madness
You will find your light and your genius
In this city where the statues they scream
For their truth is to be real

The dreams and the visions
The reality and the light
Within the soul of the city
may be whatever you wish it to be
In the city where the statues they scream
For their truth is to be real

Stand up and turn your back on reality
Lie down and let your dreams attack
The silence of the soul that is true
Is the silence that you lack
Fell the strengeth pulsating through you
As the gates, they close behind you

The answers lie within the city of light
Within the light
In the sunrise of your soul, time is the key
The music of the truth, now behold

Rise and crush them

The gates of the city lies before you
The temples of truth whispering their waves
Chase your visions, slay your fears
What moves the truth is the sound of your thoughts

The statues they scream
For their truth is to be real
Within the walls of the city
Where death ain't the end

The music of the truth, the light of the end

My favourites are Anders from In Flames and Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. Mikael's lyrics are pretty good too, especially in the ballad-type songs.

Yeah, In Flames has really interesting lyrics. Some are even thought provoking.
Lyrics like this are where they are at their best. (including your sig)

"Between the two of my eyes
feverish fractals soar
dance like were they on drugs
peyote labyrinths re-mapped exits
A hasty blink
and a million life-to-comes
will never be the same
as they never were"

"Black clouds embraces your soul
Slowly passing through repeating lacunas of anguish
When time takes your life
I will transfer you into the bare grip of thinking twanquility
Voices frilling the emptiness of the dead floating
Seamless across the surface into chilling stillness
Nothing can help you now"

"Bible Arm on social hell spins its downward spiral
with each year of unprogression a fine of failure is added
closer than ever to the edge, a faith in resident martyrs
strong object track my body, my body down."

"with his silence, he passes the
judgement over them
"with your feverish signs of force
youll make them and yourself to
believe that he still retains his full power""

"Towards the rich archaic heavens; towards the black diorama
you are the artist and the texture
that plays with the mantle of the earth"

Can I be your personal demon?
Sit back absorb the words
And feast on my mind's semen
Can I be the devil on your shoulder
We all fall down as the world gets colder

You know my only pleasure
Is to hear you cry
I'd love to hear you cry
I'd love to feel you die
And I'll be the first
To watch your funeral
And I'll be the last to leave
I'd love to hear you cry

[SOLO: HANK]

And when you're down beyond the ground
I'll dig up your body again
And make love to shame
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye

You've gotta say goodbye
'Cause I will eat your mind

King Diamond is the master of being BROOTAL!

Tom Bombadil has some bad lyrics:

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

and

Hey! Come derry dol! Hop along, my hearties!
Hobbits! Ponies all! We are fond of parties.
Now let the fun begin! Let us sing together!

and

Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow;
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.

:loco:

I like them because they are kind of cryptic but they still hold a lot of meaning (at least for me). I'm not sure if your comment was sarcastic or not, though. But seeing that you have the In Flames logo in your signature I'm gonna take it as genuine :)

Wasn't sarcastic. It's just really hard to describe something with that much talent. :p
And Whoracle has probably the most cryptic concept, beacuse it relates to how we are now. Dependent on technology and selfish.

Idk, looks kinda like MAYH lyrics in that both seem to be lacking a mastery of the english language yet try and use a lot of nifty diction as if to fool listeners into thinking their super deep or w/e. So I'm not entirely convinced on whether or not those lyrics are good or complete bullshit.

don't you get tired of bashing Opeth?

now you're telling us that Mikael thinks his fans are just fools?
