Just by judging some of my favourite albums, I'd lean towards 1994 ...and 1996 was also very good.

I vote for the early to mid-90s period just for the great selection of black metal it produced. Some good death metal, too.

I got Hypocrisy, ATG, Edge of Sanity, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Hades, Dimmu borgir, Windir, Kampfar, amongst others all in those years.
