I've just recently got the new Evergrey and I thought I'd share my views.
First off, I must comment on the packaging, wich is one of the best I've seen yet. I got the limited edition "book-version", and the images inside are great, aswell as the front and backcover.
Although when it comes to the music, it doesn't reach "In Search of Truth", mainly because it almost completely lack melody, and the choruses are mostly just Tom repeating a few words over and over. Other than that, the songs are very well crafted, with alot of background elements (kind of like Kamelot-Epica). I would say it rates somewhere in between SDT and ISOT.

Thoughts? Flames? Bananas?

Yeah I disagree with you. There is alot of melody and I think it is the best Evergrey album to date. They keep raising the bar they set for themselves with each release. I think you might have to listen to it many more times to get what I am getting from this album, I mean The End of Your Days,As I lay here Bleeding,Fragements,Blinded, Madness, I'm Sorry all drip with tons of emotion of melody, maybe you just consider what Tom does different than others you consider to have more?? I don't know but I think its a near perfect album.

Another thing, I couldn't help to think about Nevermore when I heard the album. It has some similarities with "Dead heart in Dead World", in lyrics atleast.
About the melodies... weither they are actually less or if they are just not as apperant as they were on ISOT, I think is because of 3 main differencies.
One being the more progressive guitarwork on the album, wich didn't leave any melodies to rule the music.
And the other I think is the keyboards wich on ISOT was more apperant and leading than the guitars.
And third, the lyrics are more repetitive this time around, probably because they weren't telling a story anymore.

Ofcourse, weither a person finds this album Evergrey's best or not is up to them. It is definately better than Solitude, and that's saying alot.
And it's as you said (Bear), it's a "grow on you" album.

I think there's still lots of melody on this album, and it is balanced well with the heavier approach...and the choruses are as powerful as anything on the previous albums, if not more...the keyboards may be pushed into the background at the time, but they always play a crucial role in the music.

You can always tell the truly great albums when they get better as you listen to them more.

I'm not going to say whether or not RD is "better" or "worse" than ISOT, because why even care about that when they are both so freaking awesome? I'd suggest you let the songs sink in a bit more--but don't force it.

Well, I still thing the choruses are abit too simplistic lyric- and melodywise. Ofcourse there are exceptions on the album, like the titletrack.
