You know when you hear a band that a really good friend is in, but cant really judge if they are any good or not because of bias? I think it's pretty good, but can't really make my mind up if its good enough to get a decent fan-base going.

What do you lot think? They are not metal, so if you're a narrow minded music fan who only listens to teh mEtaLz!!!!! Don't bother to listen or give a point of view. They are called After The Rush.

ive seen them play quite a few times and they execute the recorded material extremely well, live. They're influenced by Neil Young, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, Wilco, Talk Talk, Eels, Grandaddy and RadioHead.

I think a band like this could do with more either:

- a more expressive vocalist (think the darker side of Jarvis Cocker [without the sexuality], or perhaps Nick Cave)

- perhaps more duets (think Stipe and Mills back in the IRS days of REM)

- perhaps replace acoustic guitar parts with mandolin?

The music has some good foundations, but lacks personality. I feel like the Radiohead influence is a bit too strong (and mind you, I'm displaying some bias here too, because I hate Radiohead with a passion).

Some good ideas from this band though.

Hmm...the vocalist is one of my life long friends and so is the guitarist (in fact i used to play in a metal covers band with both of them). Dan (the vocalist) has really come leaps and bounds with his vocals and is far better than he used to be, i believe he can improve further and incidently loves Nick Cave.

I find the Radiohead influence rather tenuous, but that's what they say. I dunno, you seem to think its there, so i guess it must have some RH mood.

Oh no... I feel awful LOL, I didnt realise they were your friends :(

Well, I guess I can only be honest about it. I think if your friend can concentrate on a more expressive style of singing, a darker edge to it, it will decorate the music much more.

No its fine. The reason i posted this was to get some unbiased opinions, they're so new that the only people who i know have heard them are other friends....it's fine for people to give constructive criticism as you have done. No worries at all. In fact they would welcome constructive feedback.

another reason to completely ignore you/anyone in your family/a person anyone in your family knows personally

i see this is becoming a "i know this guy who knows someone who plays in this band" thread.
Oh well..........kudos to the Hubster for actually taking time to listen and commenting.
