Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Definitely. I absolutely love Skinny Fists. I'd say that my favourite part is 'Broken Windows, Locks Of Love Pt. III'. That maybe the most uplifting pieces of music ever.

WRONG. Proof:

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

GYBE is truly amazing. I have been luckily enough to see them live and that was a sublime performance that they made.
With in the same style I would recommend the band Silver Mt. Zion. The bands share a few members.

I've heard Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, and honestly, I wasn't that impressed. It seemed that for every minute amazing of music, you get 3 minutes of... well, boring music. I really can't understand how every single post rock band that I like (or any post rock band, for that matter) is always compared to this band. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'd take Explosions In The Sky or Mono over them any day.

Hmmm, I can see how you'd take Explosions over Godspeed, but Mono?

Explosions In the Sky is a stand out post rock band due to their incredible amount of melody(see Your Hand In Mine), but IMO Mono does nothing that Godspeed hasnt done any better.

Storm at 9:00 and beyond is a great ear fucking! I cant help but be really moved by it.

Again, I've only heard one Godspeed album, and I own 2 Mono albums, and from what I hear, Mono is better than Godspeed because they don't have 20 minutes songs with only 10 minutes of actual music on them. If Godspeed were more condensed and didn't have these full minutes of non music, maybe I'd be into them more.

Also, agree with you about Explosions - I think the work they do with both guitars playing different melodies is just genius. It just soudns so simple yet intricate at the same time. I can't get enough of them.

Yeah those ''empty'' parts is something you have to deal with when you are listenin' to Godspeed. But that doesn't take the awesomeness away.

What do you guys think of Red Sparrows? I only have Every Red Heart... and I think it brilliant, since it's so much heavier than other post rock, yet it's still very melodic and a lot of the times it actually FEELS like a story through music.

if you can't stand GYBE's atmospheres and empty spaces,... then probably they're not your tyupe of band. I think that's a big part of their sound and what makes GYBE GYBE. I personally think they add a lot to their sound and make them stand apart from the other post rock bands.

I love that album. I agree it actually does feel like a story. The actual story/concept to it is pretty sad. Fuckin commie chinese are always killing their own like that.

both red sparowes albums are amazing IMO. some of my favorites. id also highly recommend This Will Destroy You. their ep and new album are beautiful.

anyways, whats everyones favorite gybe song? Its a really tough choice but it would have to be either "providence" "motherfucker=redeemer" (the second one) or "antennas to heaven"

I guess GYBE and I will just have to part as friends...

Red Sparowes are indeed amazing - my only problem with them being that their song titles are so bloody long.. I find it hard enough remembering the names of my favourite songs.. But christ.. Give me a break Red Sparowes!

Favourite GY!BE songs... Probably Sleep, Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls and either East Hastings or Providence.
