I don't mean to come across as a bigot or anything, but I somewhat agree with Mr. Cosby:
Cosby Has Harsh Words for Black Community

Associated Press/AP Online

CHICAGO - Bill Cosby went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."

He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."

Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.

"When you put on a record and that record is yelling `n----- this and n----- that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.

He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."

Cosby appeared Thursday with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the education fund, who defended the entertainer's statements.

"Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."

Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement.

"Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?"

Cosby also said he wasn't concerned that some whites took his comments and turned them "against our people."

"Let them talk," he said.

Stop trying to make it sound racist, tara. He's right, the civil rights folks would kill themselves if they saw the kids acting like that.

it's not a racist because:

a.) he's a black american(no, not african-american. if they weren't born in africa, possess african citizenship in addition to american citizenship, or happen to be the offspring(as in children of the immediate family) of an african(third part being my personal opinion), then they reserve no right to call themselves african americans. i don't walk around calling myself a euro-native american. )

and

b.) it's directed at the ethnicity to which he is affliated. in this case black americans.

I completely agree, as do all sane people.
*nod*

Hip hop culture is destroying the black community, and both them and the government/media support this. Nothing's gonna do any good.

But hey.. it's much easier to blame it on what white people did to your ancestors instead of taking charge yourself, after all, everyone knows blacks are the only race who has ever been mass persecuted in the history of the world.

I wasn't trying to make it sound racist. I just didn't know if people here would think I was being a bigot by agreeing with him or whatever.

I don't think that Bill hates Black People, he was just making an observation of the youth of today. He made some good points, I thought. If a white person said this then "all hell would break loose". I'm glad someone finally brought this to attention.
Its amazing how many kids talk slang and can't even read and write properly.

Why haven't any other prominent black American/African Americans support Bill Cosby?

There were two Black kids from broken families in the slums who had made a living for themselves through long, hard work. Obviously, even with the Scholarships they recieved, they could still only go to a community college. Bill Cosby heard their story, and decided to give them the money to them for a prestigious college, as a reward for all their hard work. He says he wants them to be an example to the kind of people he mentioned in that first post.

He should be revered as a hero by his race.

Surely there's plenty of white people in the same situation as the blacks Cosby is railing against? It's not a black thing, it's a human thing - a large section of the human race is just worthless, stupid shit - there's not much you can do about it, these people either don't have the opportunity or desire to better themselves.
Let them wallow in their own faeces.

Well, I don't live in America, so I don't have the first-hand insight that you guys can bring into this discussion. I think Mr. Cosby has some good points in what he is saying. On the other hand I think he is making it quite easy for himself by saying, if the black community paid more attention in school, they had none of the social and economical problems they now have to endure.

In spite of Bill Cosby's words I'm convinced that there is more to this problem than the black community ingnoring what their fathers achived in the civil rights movement.

Again, since I don't live in america I can't be 100% sure of my point, but we have a similar case in Germany:

Since the end of WWII Germany has become a bit of a "melting pot" itself, for we had to invite and "naturalize" a lot of "guest workers" from Italy, for we had to rebuild the whole country from ground-level. Over the next decades the stream of people coming to Germany got broader and broader and included the old soviet-countries, Turkey (a lot of political refugees), Pakistan, and a more second- and third world nations which is necessary because by now our society is over-aged, what every german population pyramid can state.

The problem is that of "Integration". In the seventies we started buidling giant, ugly homes for hundereds of families and brought a lot of these peolpe to live there. Most naturally russians started sticking to other russians, turkish people with other turkish people and the native germans were happy with that for they didn't need to care for them.

I guess you can see what comes next:
The groups started to fence themseves in, and we started fencing them out just because it was easier for both sides to do that. But, if a "foreign" community gets fenced in, they soon will cease to talk in german, for they don't need to do that, they will stop assimilating our culture to theirs, because their daily life for the most part takes place among themselves. And we didn't care, for they were taking care of themselves.
The cultural-clash was pre-programmed. By now we have several million people in germany not willing to learn our language properly nor accepting aculture apart of their own. This led to a massive loss of education, both among native and non-native Germans, together with economical and finacial reasons.

Quite a lot Germans start blaming the foreigners for this state again, and the very long loathed token "Ghetto" comes into daily conversations again more often.

Still, very few accept the truth, which is that both sides have to take a major change in handling each other. We have to learn that the word "We" is better than "They" and "us". Unfortunately I believe there isn't a royal way to solve these problems. And the difference between America and Germany in this case is that we have a multi-cultural clash and you a clash with a culture being stripped off all culture. People without an idea of what they are as a community.

Sorry for this "Essay", but this is a very hard topic and my English not good enough to reflect on it properly. In the end I think, Cosby still has good points, but he simply can't blame the black community alone for what is going wrong. To end in rather pathetic words: There still are two sides of the coin.
