Black Metal CD reccommendations

Fine, first off, from what I remember, "The Nocturnal Silence" clearly has a lot of Death Metal traits, not so much black metal. Secondly, Dimmu Borgir did originally play black metal until Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, and it was pretty much an Emperor rip-off. After that they went overboard, started becoming more thrash/rock, "techno-synths", etc. Not Black Metal. Lastly, Cradle of Filths early works were death metal with black metal imagery, they then turned into gothic metal.

Thank you. I have Emperor stuff but haven't got into it. I know DB are crap as I've heard their commercial oriented stuff. I just wanted you to put your point across instead of telling the guy to shut up. Your opinions are interesting to more than just the Greys.

Anyways, if someone wants to get into black metal, those are two albums that are fairly accessible and widely reguarded as masterpieces in the genre. And you are telling him to go listen to shite like Venom...?

Can you even explain why those albums aren't essential instead of just giving him shit? Another thing Venom is an early prototype of black metal and most people don't even qualify them as black metal.

necrophobic is melodic death metal. a lot of death metal bands have somewhat blackened themes, so i hardly see how that makes them more black metal than emperor when the sound and delivery of the songs are totally different. subtle differences from the patterns in the riffs, the way idealogies are presented, song structures, even the purpose of the artists etc will determine whether a band falls into the black or death category.

many bands cross over genres as genre themes and influences are not mutually exclusive. if you want someone go define what "black metal" sounds like, in comparison to "death metal", you can really only give examples of different types of each as the exact "sound" is not defined. this can be pretty obviously be seen by looking at the bands in each genre.

That aside, you would probably like The Other Side and Summon the Beast by The Abyss; both were excellent albums.

What I've heard of their other stuff was not only inaccessible but crap so I understand why you'd say that, but Mysterious Semblance isn't particularly inaccessible (certainly no more so than a number of other albums on that list).

Spiritual Catharsis and Misanthropic Isolation - In The Heart Of The Rainforest are quite excellent, they just take alot of time and dedication to enjoy.

I really don't get the hype around this band, he generates a lot of nice atmosphere but clearly has no idea how to play drums, his guitar work is sloppy and those vocals are really cheap sounding.

I personally only regard early Emperor as BM I lost interest when they went "symhonic".

Necrophobic - Nocturnal Silence shares common ground with BM and their later material would lean strongly in the BM direction. I wouldnt call them definitively BM but they are fucking great and appeal to both death and black metal fans.
