Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

From what I've heard, 1080i and 720p are essentially the same thing. Or put another way, the differences are negligible. 1080p, which is superior to both, is what I'm going to buy. A 40", either Samsung or Sony.

I have been swearing by all things Samsung for the last 3 years or so ... all my PC monitors and TV are by them ... no problems and flawless since day one.
Really funny as 10 years ago Samsung was on the level of Emerson ... and now they are kicking Sony's ass left and right.

i have to say though ... blu-ray looks awesome on hdtv ...

Zod make sure you get an 1080i HDTV ... I have a 32" Samsung HDTV but its only 720 ... love the fucker though

720p and 1080i are the same thing essentially. If you have a 720p television, you have a television capable of 1080i as well.

About the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray, I own an HD-DVD player and am very confident it will be the winning format.

Screw all this HD, Blue-Ray crap. Another marketing ploy to bait consumers in to upgrading to a format that will only be relevant for a several years. I'll make the move when it becomes the norm and standard dvd is no longer a viable option. Oh wait, I don't even own a television.

I'm with Jerry here (except for the TV part). Just another marketing ploy to take money out of your pocket and put it in someone else's. Need to escape? Read a book. Got lots of money? Become a philanthropist.

Paramount and Dreamworks just announced all their new relases will be HD-DVD exclusive. In the next week or two, so will Warner or New Line. Blu-Ray at this point is a sinking ship. Without the content, they cannot possibly win.

interesting development ...

Sony sinks deeper

A good quotation from The Corrections: The main difference between America and Lithuania, as far as Chip could see, was that in America the wealthy few subdued the unwealthy many by means of mind-numbing and soul-killing entertainments and gadgetry and **************s, whereas in Lithuania the powerful few subdued the unpowerful many by threatening violence. *goes and plays XBOX*

What about an HD projector? Those are good for those people with "bonus rooms" but they cost thousands.

Actually, Warner looks like they'll maintain their agnostic stance.

As for Blu-Ray being a sinking ship, I disagree. It was the HD-DVD ship that was sinking, so they bribed two studios for a year of exclusivity.

Anyone here old enough to remember filmstrips? How they would start flapping at the end of the movie? I miss shit like that. Never complained about the quality of video back then. ("Back in my day.....etc.")

me and my g/f decided the other day that we will go over all the pics we took with a digital camera for the last few years and print select ones on proper photo paper.

Is your setup now complete? What did you decide to go with?
Not complete. I bought the Samsung LN-T4061F (40", 1080p). Picture looks amazing with HD. I bought a $100 upconverting Pioneer DVD player that the Best Buy sales guy recommended. DVDs look solid, but nothing like HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I suspect I'm going to return the upconverting DVD player and buy the Pioneer Blu-Ray player.

I'm leaning towards Blu-Ray for a few reasons. One, it's the superior technology. Two, I suspect the PS3 will eventually land the decisive blow in favor of Blu-Ray. Third, I suspect Blockbuster's decision (to go exclusively Blu-Ray) will have greater impact than Paramount's decision (to go exclusively HD-DVD). Far more movies are rented than purchased. Also keep in mind, Paramount and Dreamworks HD-DVD exclusivity is only for one year. And they've already taken huge criticism from Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg for it, who want their movies on the superior format. Lastly, if HD-DVD was to win the war, HD-DVD players would be at about $200 by that time, so no huge loss.

hmm ... according to the industry the PS3 has been a flop in the US so far.
don't give up on the upconverting DVD ... I am assuming you came from a tube TV to the LCD ... and I know DVD's looked a bit more washed out on LCD than on tube ... but believe me ... its an adjustment period for your eyes right now :)

I agree with the Lurch. The picture of my 32" standard tube was in some ways better than my widescreen LCD. There is definitely an adjustment period.
