Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

Blu-Ray is beating HD-DVD on almost 3 to 1 when it comes to sells. Blu-Ray disc storage capacity exceed HD-DVD by quite a shot.

So, Blu-Ray I say.

I bought the Samsung LN-T4061F (40", 1080p).

Looks like a great set ... damn in less than a year a 40" 1080p is now the same price than the 32" I bought in November last year ... 1399 at J&R

hmm ... according to the industry the PS3 has been a flop in the US so far.
It has. I think I read somewhere that they were hoping to see 6 million by now, but have only sold 1.6. However, keep in mind, the 360 was out for over a year, till developers really began to figure out to write to the metal. Once the first truly killer game is launched for the PS3, I expect it to give the PS3 the boost it needs, and in turn give Blu-Ray yet another edge.

don't give up on the upconverting DVD ... I am assuming you came from a tube TV to the LCD ... and I know DVD's looked a bit more washed out on LCD than on tube ... but believe me ... its an adjustment period for your eyes right now :)
Here's how I see it... the picture I receive on my HD channels is vastly superior to my upconverted DVDs. However, my HD channels are only coming in at 1080i. Blu-Ray will send a 1080p signal to my HDTV. To that end, I suspect that a Blu-Ray disc will look vastly superior to an upconverted DVD.

On a side note, I'm now seriously considering the PS3. From everything I've read, as a Blu-Ray player, it's just as good (picture wise) as most of the Blu-Ray players on the market.

of course it will, no doubt about that. I saw a Blu-Ray in action at Circuit City some months ago and it was flawless ... more so than regular HDTV ...

For me though, I enjoy HD programing like nature stuff, sports and the ocassional talk show or sitcom ... but my movies I would rather have a bit of film like quality to them ... and HD as great as it is, looks sometimes too unnatural and exagerated in the color pallete.

I am not a gamer, but if there is nothing on the horizon that is coming soon, it won't be for quite some time as you know games take years to develop.

According to the articles I read about PS3's misfire is that really besides gamers and techies ... it has no appeal, especially at its pricepoint.

And this is why the Wii has been such a hit as it offers interactivity and great gameplay (allegedely as I have not played it, but it intrigues me more so than the PS3) but lousier graphics ... and really most people dabling in video games could care less about them. Shit ... I can play crap on shockwave.com for an hour and get lost in it.

Hard to say what's on the horizon, as I'm not a gamer either and don't really follow this scene. That said, the reason for Blu-Ray's current dominance, is no doubt the PS3.

Well, they're now down to $500. I agree, that's not cheap and perhaps that won't impact purchasing decisions. To me, unless you believe the PS3 is the death of Sony in the video game market space, they're going to have a killer game, and that's going to impact the format war.

I think the Wii has taught the gaming industry an important lesson... it's about game play. Sure, superior graphics are desirable, but game complexity isn't always. I'd much rather play Madden '93 than Madden '08.

In many ways I would too, but really only for the context in which I originally played it. Right now, I can't wait until NHL 2008 comes out for 360. I still have my N64 around for the "good old days".

Sooooo, what'd you end up getting Zod?

I was at Best Buy the other day and they have some new little area of high-end shit. I saw a TV that filled half the wall and cost $7000. I thought my $1300 LCD was nice.

I just don't feel I'm going to buy either until one dies. I do wish they'd start selling frigging HD-DVD drives for PCs though, Blu-Ray has them there. They're in development in *some* laptops is all I know.

I'm really happy with my Samsung and I'm glad I got an LCD as opposed to Plasma, although each has a drawback compared to a tube, which had the unpleasant issue of sticking out halfway across my living room

Heres a question for you kids. Are they any HDTVs that don't blur the shit out of SD? Seems many do.

yeah, SD does not look that great on flat screens, be it LCD or Plasma ... their higher res capability really bringing out the shortcomings of SD ...
but you'll get used to it.

Supposedly, plasma does HD better than LCD, but I haven't verified that myself. That said, I suspect once you start watching stuff in HD, you're going to abandon SD programming. Not sure who you're looking at to provide you HD programming, but DirectTV is planning to add 70+ channels in September and be close to 130 in all by year end.

By the way, for anyone who cares, I bought the 60GB PS3 for $500 today. A few reasons for this decision...

1. The format war may take a few years before it's over. If Blu-Ray loses, I'll be able to pick up a quality HD-DVD player for $200 by that time. In the mean time, I can watch HD movies, in the superior format.

2. Even if Blu-Ray loses the format war, at least I'll be left with the superior gaming system.

3. For $500, the PS3 represents the best value as a pure Blu-Ray player. In tests, even against $1,200 units, it compares favorably. Plus, it now upconverts regular DVDs.

Just watched Aeon Flux on Blu-Ray... the picture quality was just ridiculous.

Enjoy it dude ... I am sure it smokes. The logic for the decision seems sound. Netflix has a lot of stuff fore rental so you should be good for awhile.

Personally I got tired of all the upgrade games over the years in electronics. Having sold them over a decade ago, I had some pretty high end systems early on. I got so jaded that I even ditched my surround rig last winter and now run my LCD ... well ... hooked up only to my DVD. :loco:

as much as i love my hdtv ive still put very little use to it. im one of the douchebags that waits until the format becomes affordable and im too quality conscious to buy low-end products so im screwed all around.
