here's the first roughmix of a new song from a band I'm working with regularily...usually I went for a very clean mix, this time I though thought I'd leave some "sweden" in it, so the drums are very much natural (kicksample blended in and on the medium paced hits there's a sample blended in about 30% on the snare, all natural on rolls and slow parts (interlude and solo), toms are all natural of course (an I love them :) ).
the goal was "big and thick", not "clear and defined".

.....haha, I used sm57s to closemic the chinas :) (in addition to the km184 overheads of course)

Guits are doubletracked (Überschall) with ltd EC1000 (Emg), solo is ESP Eclipse with d-activator
I know some pumping here and there and other stuff, but I wanted to get some opinions, before I revise this.

click on the graphic representation of the mix:

imagine this with dark hair of course!

EDIT: and the newer version is after the diet...she's like 40kG lighter now

Sounds nice. The only thing that I noticed was that the guitars overpower the vocals a bit, and the solo sounds pretty harsh.
You could listen to Nightwish as reference maybe. Alltough they have a cleaner sound, and you said you wanted it to be thick.

Wow yeah, major pumping. Its really quite distracting.

Not digging the piano, it sounds overcompressed and thus too low-middy.
Overall its really really lowmiddy. Way too much 2-300hz, even for this 'big and thick' style I think.

Btw, why do none of your files have extensions in the URL? Its just 'Zweiter', not 'Zweiter.mp3'. I always click on it expecting another website.

In the first part the guitars have an awesome growl but when they played lower chords the guitar sound seems more confused. Don't know if more presence could solve this "problem".
Anyway the Bogner have a very nice sound with lot of potentiality

ha, just opened it for the second time and the CLA comps trial has expired (thought they'd be running for some more days), so I had to quickly replace them with the API comp...
link is updated, so please check again (I've also reduced some bass freq from the kick during doublebass passages and got rid of the high boost I had on the solo...pure amp tone now...well, plus delay of course)....

EDIT: still uploading, check in 5 mins

Way better man! But I would raise a little vocals in some parts and turn down a (very) little the guitars. Nice growl by the way!
What do you use in PT for that glitch effect?

yeah, haven't really automated the vox yet, esp. in the interlude it'll be necessary.

highlight the section you wanna have slow'd down, go to "audiounit"-->pitch-->varipitch.

Upload finished btw (check now XeS, you might have listened to an older one)

I am liking the tone a lot. It sounds better when it is in tune too. ;)

I don't dig the song that much but I enjoy listening to it because I enjoy how it sounds. it kind of reminds me of Edge of Sanity in a way, the way some of those single note guitar lines sound. It is really cool.

listening to this on my new opals !! really transparent sounding mix. like the guitar tone.

although as others said : the pumping is quiet a little too much for my taste.
also listening to this on a small 2.1 system sometimes the vocals get buried.

guitars are cool, though i cant judge 100% on them due to the pumping.

but man, nice work!
maybe upload a "not so pumpy" mix. so we can hear the true beauty of the bogners!! ;-)

cheers everyone.
it's pumping slightly in 1-2 places (first half of chorus for example), but not as much as some of you think, I actually think you're confusing "pumping" with the fact that he's playing palmmutes exactly on the kick, that gives this up-down effect, but it's not the kick driving the guits or so.

dcb: congrats on your speakers!
bout the vox volume: yep, I haven't done the automation yet, so the volume isn't perfectly balanced in all sections

I like how the guitars sit in this particular mix a lot. It took me a little time to get used to them, though. I would ask for a tiny bit less ambiance on the vocal tracks though. It makes it a TINY bit cloudy, but that's it.

Drums sound great man. I wish I could get tones like that.

I do hear fizz, I'm not going to lie. If you could tame it a bit and maybe bring up guitar level 0.5dB you'd be rockin'.
