fucking hell....virtual instruments are good these days, but it's such a difference still to the real thing.

I've just finished recording brass for the new Alestorm and everytime I'm recording brass I'm thinking "damn, real brass sounds so much much better than a vsti ever could"..

loving it!

Haha, damn dude, what instruments did you have, and how'd you get the session players?

Check out this promo pic (tiny though it may be) of my Dad, btw ;)

hey Lasse, what mics are you using on the horns you record? Lately i've been recording some brass and i've been a bit underwhelmed with how my trombones have sounded. They lack alot of low end when i mic them.

Last time I recorded a brass ensemble I used a blumlein with two KSM44's. The imaging on it kicks ass. Too bad the ensemble can't play better. haha

depends, for metal I usually only closemic....preferring the sm7 for trombones.
make sure to not aim into the funnel but at the side of it to get the lowend gnarl.

414 is ok too, I preferred the sm7 though...sometimes in combiation with a ribbon

Royer 121 on brass = awesome

Actually, brass is QUITE metal, thank you very much (get it? GET IT!?!!?!?!? HARDIE HAR HAR!!! :Puke: :D) - and I played tuba for like 11 years, BAM

My first instrument was trombone, but I don't remember any of that shit.

MOTOWN PRO TIP:
I once read that they often had the horn players face a wall and recorded that way instead of having them play directly at the mic.

I know, what you mean.

I´m very in real strings..my family and some friends of mine play violine or cello as a professional and I often have the ability to record real strings. The contrast between vst silver edition and real instruments is enormous, (especially for string musicians it´s nearly unbearable). Lasse, for example..my sister don´t like the outro of my song "gunman´s poem" You know, what I mean. She would like to play some violine tracks over this vst stuff..(that´s a technique, I often use). The combination of both. But she´s in Thailand, so that´s unfortunately not possible.

Damn that's bad ass man! The instrument usually gets a shitty reputation for walking bass lines or whole notes but man, you can tear that instrument up with some soloing skills
