I've talked to a few "normal" music fans, and disappointment with the new Metallica album (released yesterday) is spreading like a pornstar's nether regions at a Penthouse photo shoot.

Seriously. I've been told the new CD comes with a DVD of them playing the songs live at that prison in Cali for $10. Not a bad deal, but I just don't think I can force myself to listen to it after hearing fans of stuff like System of a Down and Mudvayne tell me how much it sucks.

These so-called "normal" music fans even commented on how much it sounds like nu-metal, James' terrible vocals, and the terrible (muddy) production.

Has Metallica finally fallen from grace for good?????????

<xSoaDFaNx14> dued i listened to thies totla SHIT ABND todey.....there called today is teh day and tehy are teh total SUX MAN!!!!!!!!1
<npearce> omg! better not listen to them then!

the proof of how bad it is .. is right on the Metallica message board .. right on the Metallica Official site.

there are like 8 negative threads to 2 positive ones.

if your own loyal fans are posting shit in your home ... you know you fucked up.

how did Metallica release this thinking it was good ... they must be surrounded by "yes men" who are totally out of touch with the music scene.

I saw it in the stores yesterday, and I knew that I needed to download it before anything. And now I don't even want to download it. :ill:

Funny isn't it when Lars Ulrich recently claimed that the new Metallica was a cross between Messhugah and early Entombed. :tickled:

The production is pure shit, his vocals have got to go, and Hammett is wasting his talent...

:loco:er, excuse me....since when was Hammett talented? He's a shit rhythm guitarist - always strumming chords behind Hetfields playing, and his solos are broken into four categories:
(a) Plagiarised - "thank you Dave Mustaine"
(b) Assisted - "Mr Satriani, I need your help....NOW!!!"
(c) Shit - "I've run out of ideas...wonder what this wah pedal does...ooohh, I can use this for EVERYTHING!"
(d) Absent - "Guitar solos are no longer needed, so I better grow my hair long again to at least look the part - as long as I get paid because lord knows I'm expendable now that Jason's fucked off to Voivod"

Hammet - the most overrated guitarist ever! He should be buried next to Gers.

There are not enough  smilies to comment on that post. Man, that was hilarious. I always thought he sucked at rhythm but I did like his leads from long ago. He's no Mustaine by any means, but was still good when he actually would solo.

For the record I almost always use my wah pedal, but I play bass so maybe it doesn't count as bad. :p

Wah on the bass rules. You can't get enough of it when used with a bass. If I played bass, I would run everything through a wah, and a hint of fuzz. Ahhh good ol' Cliff, them were the days. *sniff*

Hammet likes to plan out his solos too much. I like a good improved feel. Predictable solos suck.

You mean 'improvised' right? Although both would work in this case...

...he cannot improvise. He needs to sit for weeks and weeks to work out twenty seconds of melody. Did anyone ever see "A year and a half in the life of..." when they filmed the making of the black album?? You know - that double video that also covered the following tour?

They were showing the evolution of Hammet's guitar solo to "Unforgiven". Let me say this: the initial improvised version was disgusting. Can he play anything outside of the pentatonic major I ask? No! And then after a lot of badgering, and phone calls to Joe Satch, he managed to come up with something. The final result isn't bad, but it 'aint no "Mr Crowley"...

Yup, the slightest hint of overdrive is all I ever use. I've been thinking about upgrading my wah to get more of a wah tone, the Morley kicks ass but you can still hear the unadulterated tone sometimes...

There's a question, asked a million times, but WHAT THE FUCK WOULD CLIFF BURTON THINK OF METALLICA OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS!?!?! Metallica would probably still open every show with Hit The Lights if Cliff were alive.

Lars once said that Metallica could release an album that half of its fans hated and it would still go to number one. His self-fulfilling prophecy was wrong though...half was way too generous an estimate of disapproval. :) I would like nothing more than to see a UM-wide moratorium on St. Assbanger discussion...there are far too many worthier albums to analyze to death. :)

I agree! Enough with the St. Lamer discussion!

Dude, you are just trying to get a rise out of me...

First, Mustaine's solos suck much ass for the most part. He is a rhythm god, but leads??

And don't forget, Hammet has tons of song writing credits for really good songs..

As they say in the rap world... don't be a hater.

But the new album sucks in ways unimaginable.

A more apropriate cover ... courtesy of some very talented artist.

:D :D :D :D

Perhaps a little, but it was well thought out. And all joking aside, I do think he's a horrible soloist for the most part. His best solo ever is the fast outro on Orion, but that was transcribed by Satch for the most part, so....

First, Mustaine's solos suck much ass for the most part. He is a rhythm god, but leads??

Underrated lead player if anything. Check out his solo on Wake Up Dead, and his trade off's on Go To Hell & Hangar 18. Marty Friedman bought the best and worst of the mutha.

True. For a start, Creeping Death is in a league of it's own.

But the new album sucks in ways unimaginable.

It is remarkable at how bad this album is. Granted, I've only heard 3-4 tracks, and St Anger makes Load/Reload look good. Production and bad song writing aside, what the HECK happened to James's voice???

The new album has had a fairly good rap on Final Fantasy Online's forums. Make of that what you will...
