Just offloaded my 6260 on a friend needing an amp.

The thing has a fairly monstrous clean sound, but I wanted it for the gain channel (which is just too harsh and nasal out of the box). So being more of a clean dude, he gets what he wants, and being more of a 'in need of money to get Fireball dude' I get what I want too.

At least it made it onto one of my mixes! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/285689/ermz-headcrusher-demo-10.mp3

Even if it was direct into Catharis Pres8!

Good day!

@Dan: Above all man I can't wait to have a space to be able to actually use a real rig in. That's the limiting factor. I can get an amp and cab any time, but it'd be useless here. So it's a matter of battling with the Harley Benton at the lowest volume level I can coax out of whatever head is in here for the time being.

@Chris: Haha yeah, though I have a feeling it may have come to the end of its journey for a while. I sold it to a mate who digs the clean channel above all, and that's certainly one of its strengths. The distorted sounds just weren't for me though. Too much inherent junk in the tone, but for the price one can't expect anything else.

Thanks for the kind words on the mix. It's actually Headcrusher's band 'Good Will Out'. It was a bit compromise ridden. Drums were MIDI into superior 2, DIs were into the Bugera, which went right into the PC (I think with the power amp saturation too) and there was a ton of vocal editing and a bit of sound design. I created the verse 'loop' for instance, pulled the piano, rhodes and most of the other sounds. It was a very bare bones session, so I think all things considered it's good that it came up as it did.

So I guess the guys that said it genuinely stacked up to a 5150 for the high gain tones were full of shit then. I was almost thinking of getting one once I had all the money together, this definitely made me think twice about it.

Because you heard one contrary opinion now? Note that Ermz didn't say he's getting rid of it because it doesn't get close enough to a fiddy but because he doesn't like the distortion channel.

I spent so many hours A/B-ing the Bugeras to the "real" things. If you expect exact carbon copies, go look somewhere else. They come pretty close but they can stand on their own.

And if Ermz was mostly only able to use it on little volume with a 2x12, then those aren't exactly the best conditions for a 120 watts head to shine.

All I'm saying is: Don't disregard things before you used them on your own. You might regret it later.

I mean, it's kinda ironic. I used to have a Fireball (among others) and now I have the Bugera (among others). And even though the Fireball being one of the Engls that comes closest to a fiddy, they're still vastly different.

:)

I've tried the Bugera on a few occasions and every time there was a lot of grain, fizz and 'junk' in the signal. Two of the times, through the same cab as a Mark IV and a Randall V2, and both amps totally ate the 6260. Never tried a 6505 next to it though.

I got it mostly to practice and play around with mic positions. I'll let you guys know how the next 'real' amp goes, and how much of that junk is actually coming from the Harley Benton.

You'll probably never get really happy under the circumstances you've got to operate with now.

FWIW, it seems insane but I actually took the Bugera over a 6505. My budget would have been sufficient, but I just like crunch mode on the Bugera, the built-in reverb etc. I like the 6505 equally as much but now I have an amp that I really like and still had enough funds to get me a new laptop.

I would say it is ALL he Harley Benton 2x12 and not the bugera.

I played one at our local musicstore with a Mesa overzised 4x12
after that we pluged in the real deal.

They are sooooooooo fucking close to each other!!!!!

Next time put the 2x12 on top of something similar to a 4x12....the body is vibing with the 2x12 and gives you a better sound. Try it :)

Ok the markIV is a beast but I highly doubt the V2 sounds better than the 6260, the v2 is a piece of junk and it costs a shitload compared to the 6260.
I own a T2 (basically a v2 with no added eq) and it is the worst amp I ever had, I was fool to buy it, I don't know why I did it, sometimes in life we do some mistakes and in my case is one of them.
I compared the 6260 to my real 5150, it's almost there, definitely the midrange is different... no balls.
My 333 sounds a shitload warmer compared to the peavey XXX, the 333 is the way to go, if you want some bugera.
Guys: harley benton cabs are awesome for the price, a shitload warmer than marshalls (I own both), if you don't like it then you miced it the wrong way.

The V2 may very well be a piece of junk, but it did still sound better than the 6260 and the 333 in the store at the time. I'm sure the Bugeras are capable amps, but for me they take too much work. I want the tone to be closer to the record when it's coming out of the cab. Once again, the Bugera has too much junk (granted the 6260 is the worst model of them - the 333 being a lot beefier). Every time I've heard it live and used it on a record, it's been confirmed. The Mark IV was more usable in the core mid registers, with way less harsher high harmonics. We used both amps on Melb_shredder's band's EP. Using it myself here, it is a grainier version of the 6505. Tubby in the low mids, a bit of a nasal mid exertion and lots of fizz, lots and lots - the treble and presence knobs almost being rendered useless past a point.

I got this thing for practice. It served it's purpose, and now it's on its way to a better home. No need for anyone to get defensive. I'm certainly not bitter about the experience.

Gotta agree though the 333 would be the way to go with this company. Would be good for death metal and modern downtuned genres. I haven't heard the 333xl in person, but have heard some clips that have put the Peavey JSX to shame. It's funny that the 6260, being the most popular model, is also the weakest. Guess it's the same reason behind why Marshall manage to sell amps at all anymore.

@Slashvan : I'm not an idiot, of course I don't totally discount amp's because one opinion:lol: Looking back at that post, it was rather poorly worded and not entirely what my intentions and thoughts really were.
I usually spend months, sometimes over a year researching expensive items before I buy them, believe me, I'm not silly enough to take the plunge on things that cost a fair chunk of cash without knowing if I'll find it usable and good to use or not.

Ever since the Bugera's came out, I don't remember how long it's been, over a year now, I've been doing research on them.
The problem is, many of the reviews I've read were crappy guitar magazine reviews that tend to just give any product good ratings/reviews anyway and I'd never really had the chance to truly try one out in person.
Being able to hear sound clips from a guy that knows what he's doing really gave me a good idea of how it sounds.
I don't want it to sound like ass kissing, because it isn't, because he's just a human and not my god, but when a guy like Ermz has something serious and eductational to say, I'm far less inclined to take it with a grain of salt than I would a Harmony Central review or a guitar magazine review.
Since he's not a journalist working for a magazine he doesn't have to say the product is good if he genuinely feels it isn't, and since he isn't an overly zealous Bugera owner posting a review on Harmony Central he doesn't have to give it a good review just because he owns it.

While it hardly sounded bad, I noticed many of the strange and decidedly less than great tonal properties of the 6260 head in Ermz's clips.
For a 899.95 AUD amp, sure it's not bad and when you consider only a few years ago paying 1500 AUD got you a hybrid valve preamp/solid state Marshall AVT that sounded about 1/20th as good as the Bugera, it's definitely still excellent value for money, it's hard to argue that.
And believe me, I was stuck with AVTs for band rehearsals for a while, so I know them tonally inside out and I could never get along with them ever.
As for my "So I guess the guys that said it genuinely stacked up to a 5150 for the high gain tones were full of shit then" remark, I realize that it's not going to sound exactly like a 5150 because it has different components etc, but what I meant is that the actual quality of the tone is not quite up to the industry level standard of amps like the 5150, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, Soldano SLO-100 etc.
Sure, the SLO-100, 5150, and Recto are all different sounding amps, but most of us can agree they can all sound incredible and totally professional when put into the right hands, whereas from what Ermz is telling us, even if it is obtainable from the 6260, it's just too much work anyway. But the way it sounds using a 6260s means you'll always fall slightly short of a truly professional tone compared to the industry standard amps that cost more.
However, I shit you not when I say a 6505 head costs 2499 AUD here in Australia, and a 6260 is 899 AUD, so of course it's remarkable the Bugera is at least capable of probably almost pro tones with a bit of work (and obviously a good cab to match)

Consider that the 333XL is only 300 AUD more than the 6260, it has one more channel and each channel can be EQ'd independently, it looks to be ridiculously good value for money.
Again, I wont just buy it because Ermz has put in a good word for it.
Yes, I play death and "downtuned" styles (well no, I play a 7 string, but same shit, I have a low B string), but I'll read more about it and play it for myself before I decided to purchase one.
But that being said, one well informed opinion is worth more weight than 100 Harmony Central reviews and 10 guitar magazine reviews;)

I don't suppose any of you guys here in Oz would know how to go about getting one of the chunkier amps for anything resembling a decent price? Quite honestly I just *cannot* bring myself to pay $4k for a Mesa or ENGL. I need to nail those major label tones, but to pay so much for something that's just a freakin gain circuit, and not to mention a wooden box with speakers in it...

It always leads me back to laughing when I remember how people received the news that I bought Event Opals. 'Why would you spend so much money on monitors??' etc. etc. Considering the amount of engineering that's gone into them, and the indisputable usefulness in good monitoring, it's kind of self-explanatory. The real question is 'why would you spend the same amount for something you plug a guitar into, that mangles your sound, and needs a speaker attachment to even make a sound?'.

I've never really been one for wasting money. Yet it seems hard to do just about anything here in Oz without doing so.

tbh - I think its a case of if you want it to sound like the real deal, its going to have to be that in the first place.

granted you don't need to go all out with mics/pre's/rooms etc, I still think you'll struggle to get the rectifier/5150/etc sounds without the real deal. modelling isnt there, and evidently the bugera's aren't either. I know its on the bigger side of the investments, but its one of those that does make a difference.

I know how that feels, living in the land where Mesa Boogie Road King heads go for 8399 AUD IIRC.
After seeing American prices for 6505s, I don't feel great about having to drop 2 and a half grand on a 6505 either for an amp that is based around higher end amps but became so popular due to a cheap price that was the result of cheaper components. 2.5 grand is a lot of money and it doesn't feel good knowing you spent that on an amp that has reduced cost parts.

Have you looked into MI Amplification? Not cheap, but for around 3.7 grand they make a 4 channel 60 watt head with apparently a super transparent effects loop. Cheap, no, but it seems for 3.7 grand few amps you can buy in Australia seem to offer as much features per dollar. I guess it wont be for you if you're only after a great high gain tone though, I guess I couldn't justify spending 3.7 grand either.
They are Aussie made and appear to be made of high quality components, so it's a relative bargain compared to stuff that has a bigger price tag on it because of a dealer have to bump up prices due to importation.
There are plenty of guys making amps in their homes. I know a guy personally down in Yarraville that made a Matchless clone for himself, without the kind of price you'd expect from a real one. The guy knows how to fucking build amps too, seriously, this thing was dripping of a quality amp build.
It could take a while, but I'm sure a guy somewhere in Australia would be able to build you a Dual Recto clone for less than 2.5 grand, surely. After all, half the reason for a Dual Recto costing 4.7 grand is because it has to come in from the US and it has a well known brand name on it, but we know it's realistically a much cheaper than amp than that when we take into account actual physical parts etc, so there's no reason a local amp builder can't make something similar for around half the price.

Unfortunately Ermz, you may just have to save up and shell out for the real stuff. At least if you do, you have it forever :P

Have any friends who visit the States?/want to visit?

a. Find a product that someone in the United States wants and is affordable in Oz.
b. Ask that person in the United States for an item that you want that is NOT affordable in Oz.
c. Swap items; take product as carry on at home.

Your dollar is worth very close to as much as ours is.

How much is it for a plane ticket to the United States?

Hell, I'll buy you a Savage for a pair of Opals. Come visit me and play the amp collection while you're at it!

Also,

That mix was pretty darned good. The guitars were good as well, but I'm assuming you fought with them to get them that way?
