Yeah I know I'm late, I just watched the movie tonight. But, one question remains unanswered: how the fuck were we able to defeat those goddamn aliens? I mean, just like that, their shield went off and we were able to defeat them? Wtf. Their batteries died or something?

Bacteria. The aliens couldn't build an immunity quickly enough to fight off the natural germs so they started to die. If I remember, this is explained in the narrative by Morgan Freeman -- aside from the fact that it was in the HG Wells original.

okay..... but bacteria can't basically "eat" and electro-magnetic shield right? that doesn't explain that part.

nope, they looked pretty metallic

edit: at one point I thought the acidity of bird shit caused the shields to die

machines were organicish.

Yeah I think that's right. In fact, I was surprised to see Spielberg show that there were aliens inside the machines, particulary when they entered the farmhouse where Tom Cruise and his kid are hiding. (That was the 'jump the shark' moment for me btw, just because they looked exactly like the fuckers from Independence Day).

But anyway, those large fly-like eyes on the machines are obviously organic because as the machines begin to die, you see the crows hovering around them, eating out their eyes.

P.S. Jeff Waynes music/narrative >>>>>>>> Spielberg's version

I liked some of the inconsistencies at the beginning of the movie.... first you have all the electric-powered machines that died... then you see a guy filming the big alien machine and another taking pictures with a kodak. Eh?

oh I enjoyed it. I also rented Doom. Heh... not as bad as I thought it would be. Plus, because I played the dvd on my xbox, I could play the game demo :D
