I like John Bush's performance on The Greater of Two Evils . I give that whole album a listening session pretty often. But it's just understood that songs like "Deathrider", "Among the Living", "Gung Ho" etc... would've never been written during his period in the band. I mean, those songs were written during a different time and place for the band, and for metal in general.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the John Bush albums. But in comparison to their earlier material, one has to struggle to find any elements of what can be considered thrash metal in them. Though, this does not mean there isn't any good song writing on them! And there are plenty of good riffs and some heavy palm-muting and fast drumming on those albums. Unfortunately, you only find it on a few selected tracks. Yeah, WCFYA has some heavy shit on there. ...but again, that's about 3 out of 14 songs. It's like the heavy parts were put in there to make up for the lack of heaviness overall. ...I know you guys know what I mean.

Scott Ian used to do a lot more palm-muting, with heavy down-picking parts and then switching to crazy fast muted tremolo-picking. He and Charlie used to write some beast riffs!! And what ever happened to the "mosh parts"? I wanna see Scott doing his trademark stomp on every song! haha!

Honestly, I am just hoping for Anthrax to start writing & performing some new material which is a nod back to the thrash metal sound which defined them in the first place. I think that is what a lot of people are looking for, regardless of who the singer is. Finally, just an observation, in the 1980's Anthrax once even had a following in the punk & hardcore scene. But from the John Bush era, you are more likely to find them attracting a Bon Jovi fan. ...and that's fucking sad.

Some good points but then again that last statement is true for most metal in general. Metal was mostly an on the outer genre - these days you can see Metal on early morning news (I know I have).

Metallica in part played a bit role in getting Metal into the mainstream and accepted (and all this was prior to Load & Reload) - 'One' got them huge exposure and started opening up the general consumer masses to metal - then the Black album changed it all.

So to say compare Anthrax circa 80s to Bush era and it's fanbase it a bit generalisation if you ask me.

Either way though I agree - would love some old school thrash in any new Anthrax material.

The new album WILL BE thrashier than anything since POT.

Yeah, I have high hopes after hearing some of those new songs the performed with Dan Nelson... for example that song "Fight 'em til you can't". Charlie sounded pretty stoked about Joey's singing on there. I just hope they can maintain that type of song writing for the remainder of the new album.

Dudes, that main riff in "Fight 'em til you can't" totally sounds like "Gridlock" from the 'Persistence of Time' album.

Thrashier stuff...here's one....well at least it is a good Iron Maiden/Judas Priest type of song...like most of the songs from Spreading The Disease...

Here it is done like it should be:

...and with the other singer:

You guys honestly think the Belladonna albums are heavier than Stomp 442? I don't get it.

Regardless of which era was best, the Bush stuff is a lot heavier and less melodic.

Sure, you can find heavy songs on Stomp 442. No doubt about it. But i am just talking about Anthrax living up to their title as being one of the "Big Four", and being a "thrash metal" band again....THRASH metal. And I really hope they go back into that direction. Even the band themselves talk about the shift in their style of music during the 90's. But it's not really up to Joey Belladonna or John Bush as to what type of direction the band takes, since the song-writing is usually done by Scott and Charlie anyhow. I'm sure even John Bush was even sometimes saying to Scott and Charlie, "Hey, what's with all these groove and hard rock songs you guys are writing?? I want metal!!!"

I mean, I totally love tracks like "Nothing", "Safe Home", "Pieces", and "Black Lodge"... but those songs are really not what comes to mind when I think of Thrash Metal(Exodus, Slayer, Kreator, Sepultura, Vio-lence) Imagine yourself at the Big Four concerts this summer: Slayer is just getting through with playing "Angel of Death", and then next Anthrax gets on stage and plays "Safe Home". ...from an audience of thrash metal fans, they would get tomatoes thrown at them and booed off stage as if they were Nickelback. haha!

Busthrax and Nickelback have more in common than most Bushthrax supporters are willing to admit. If they pull out "Safe Home" with Joey, they ought to duck to avoid the rotten tomatoes and urine-filled baggies.
Ha!Ha!Ha!, This guy is really in love with Joey!
You dont have any chance with him 6er, Joey is maried and 100% hetero.

Anthrax with joey made thrash metal.Once they started writing with John they went in the groove metal direction. You can hear the influence Pantera had on them during that period. Love m' Both.

Yeah...perhaps they changed a bit when John came onboard, but I think the change was for good...no one wants to - except perhaps Slayer and Kreator - do the same thing over and over again. Even those two did punk albums for a change....

Sure Anthrax was less thrash with John - but they played - and played very well - all the greatest "hits" from Turbin and Belladonna eras... just like Metallica did during Black album's and Load tours...later they played Whiskey In The Jar and then Battery and no one had a problem with that. Why Safe Home is now a problem? Is it because Joey can't sing it?

I believe next Anthrax album will be back to the sound of POT...thrash metal is the flavor of today...I just hope they create better riffs and solos than Metallica on Death Magnetic...

There isn't any new Joeythrax available ...so why bother? Have they actually played together yet? ...perhaps Joey loses - the rest of - his voice during his South American tour... so who you (they) gonna call?

Can we expect a heavier/thrashier Anthrax? Perhaps. Perhaps we can expect to step into the shoes of 1987: a huge step backwards. I think they should have done The Big Four with John and bowed-out with dignity.

John's voice is what made "Only" the masterpiece that it is and there is absolutely no way that I would want to hear anyone else sing that song.

Two true points, but I must admit that I kinda liked Dan Nelson sing "Only". But that song just isn't written for an 80's metal voice.

And dudes, wow, comparing Bushtrax with Nickelback... the only line I can draw there is that Nickelback made the money Bushthrax would have deserved.

Now that you mention it, I can honestly say that I liked Dan singing "Random Acts of Senseless Violence" better than I did John.

Comparing Nickelback to Bush-era Anthrax is uncalled for.

With Joey back I wouldn't count on any Bushmaterial. But I wouldn't mind them playing Crush with Joey, honestly. That song could've been on PersistenceOfTime i.m.o.
